Women's Golf Gears Up for 2017 MAC Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green women's golf program will round out the 2016-17 campaign this weekend with the Mid-American Conference Championships at the Silver Lake Country Club. The 54-hole competition will include 18 holes of action each day from Friday, April 21 through Sunday, April 23 in Silver Lake, Ohio.
The 10-team tournament field will include 18-time defending champion and host-school Kent State (No. 15), as well as Toledo (No. 98), Eastern Michigan (No. 125), Northern Illinois (No. 130), Western Michigan (No. 152), Akron (No. 156), Ball State (No. 158), Ohio (No. 173), Bowling Green (No. 210) and Central Michigan (No. 230). The Falcons will send out a lineup led by sophomore Erin Fahey, followed by freshman Jessica Madry, senior Fran Rodriguez, sophomore Julia Durkin and junior Madelynn Swank.
Most recently, Fahey tied for fourth overall with a single round score of 78, +6 at the Pine Hills Shootout, prior to going 0-1-2 in the Spring Challenge Cup against Ohio. On the season, Fahey has topped the Falcons lineup five times and posted a season-high individual finish when she tied for third overall of 60 players in the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational with a score of 153, +9. Additionally, Fahey had carded a low round of 72 on two occasions.
Last weekend, Madry topped the Falcons lineup for the first time this season when she marked a score of 77, +5 in the Pine Hills Shootout to earn a career-high placing of third overall, prior to completing the Spring Challenge Cup with a mark of 1-2-0. Earlier this spring, the Houston, Texas native marked a tournament-leading 24 par scores at the two-day Falcon Invitational, and has earned a low round of 75 on the year in the ORU/SFA Spring Break Shootout.
After tying for eighth overall in the Pine Hills Shootout by carding a round of 82, +10 on Friday, Rodriguez went 2-1-0 on Saturday against the Bobcats in last weekend's Spring Challenge Cup. Two weeks back, the Flower Mound, Texas native set a season-best mark of 73, +1 in the first round of the Falcon Invitational and ultimately finished with a score of 161, +17. Prior to the performance, Rodriguez posted her former season-low score of 77 at the KZoo Classic in October.
In her third appearance in the team lineup last weekend, Durkin posted a round of 80, +8 in the Pine Hills Shootout to tie for sixth place overall. While competing against the Bobcats, Durkin finished 0-2-1 on the day in match play competition, while earlier this spring, Durkin earned an eagle in the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational on her way to carding a two-day total of 158, +14. Additionally, the Miramar, Fla. native marked a season-best round of 77 at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Shootout.
After shooting a 96, +24 to place 18th overall at the Pine Hills Shootout, Swank posted a record of 1-1-1 in the match play with the Bobcats. Swank will be rounding out the Bowling Green lineup after shooting a low round of 76 at the Cardinal Classic in September, and after posting a 164, +20 performance at the Falcon Invitational by two rounds of 82. A native of Clarendon Hills, Ill., Swank has recently carded a 78 in back-to-back events this spring in the ORU/SFA Spring Break Shootout and Rio Verde Invitational.
Last year at the MAC Championship in Noblesville, Ind., the Falcons finished eighth overall by rounds of 311, 306, and 303 for a final score of 920. Fahey led the team with the best Bowling Green score in the MAC Championships in program history when she carded a 225, +9 in 54-hole competition. Over the last seven years, the Falcons have finished eighth (2010), ninth (2011), tied for eighth (2012), sixth (2013), eighth (2014), seventh (2015) and eighth (2016).
