Zac Carey Named Top Defensive Pitcher In The MAC
May 23, 2017 | Baseball
AVON, Ohio – Zac Carey, a right-handed pitcher on the Bowling Green State University baseball team, was named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Defensive Team, the league announced Tuesday (May 23) night. The award is the MAC's de facto "Golden Glove Award," as only one player at each position earns the honor.
In only its third year of existence, Bowling Green has now placed a player on the conference's All-Defensive Team for the third-consecutive season. Last year, Riley Minorik earned a spot at second base, while in 2015, Trey Keegan was tabbed as the top defensive catcher in the MAC.
Carey had a flawless year defensively on the mound, and was the clear favorite to take home the award. The junior had the most defensive opportunities as a pitcher in the conference, and turned in a perfect 1.000 field percentage on the season.
In the category for pitchers, he registered a MAC-high 14 assists, and a MAC-high six putouts in 2017. Not a single runner, across the entire season, stole a base with Carey on the mound.
Carey logged a team-high 79.0 innings on the season, and registered a team-high four wins. He posted 37 strikeouts, while walking just 16 batters. Carey was named the MAC East Pitcher of the Week in early April after twirling a complete-game in a 9-1 victory at Northern Illinois.
The native of London, Ohio continues to rack up major end-of-the-season honors within the Mid-American Conference. After Carey's freshman season in 2015, he was named the conference's Freshman Pitcher of the Year, and also garnered Second Team All-MAC honors.
