Velasquez, Walny To Make Regional Appearances Thursday

Lexington, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University track and field team will compete in two events on day one of the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round Thursday, hosted by the University of Kentucky.

Redshirt senior Kayla Velasquez competes in the hammer throw at 11:30 am, while redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny will run the 10,000 at 9:00 pm. Both student-athletes will compete against 47 other competitors for one of 12 bids to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The Falcons have advanced one student-athlete to the national championships in each of the past four years.

KAYLA VELASQUEZ

Kayla Velasquez will compete in the first of three flights in the hammer throw, beginning at 11:30 am. She is seeded No. 41 of the 48 competitors in the event. In 2016, she placed 40^th in the hammer throw at the regional meet with a toss of 174-feet-6 (53.18m). She has a season-best throw this year of 191-9 (58.45m) and it took a toss of 193-2 to advance to the national championships out of the east region a year ago.

RACHEL WALNY

Rachel Walny competes in the 10,000 at 9:00 pm Thursday evening. She is seeded No. 18 of the 48 competitors in the event. Making her first appearance at a regional meet, Walny will look to move up into the top 12 to advance to nationals. A year ago, the time need to qualify for nationals was 34:41.48, a mark she has surpassed each time she has run the 10,000 this year. All 48 competitors will run in one heat.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Falcons will close out the regionals with the shot put Saturday evening at 6 pm. Senior Makenzie Wheat and redshirt junior Aliyah Gustafson make the Falcons one of only nine schools to have multiple entries in the event.
