Gustafson, Wheat Compete In Shot Put At NCAA Regional Meet
May 27, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Lexington, Ky. – Senior Makenzie Wheat and redshirt junior Aliyah Gustafson competed in the shot put at the NCAA East Region Preliminary round Saturday, hosted by the University of Kentucky. The duo each had a best throw of 48-feet (14.63m), but were unable to finish in the top 12 to earn a bid to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
For Wheat, the meet meant the conclusion of one of the most consistent and outstanding careers in BGSU Women's Track & Field history. She became just the second Falcon to qualify for the NCAA regionals in all four years of her career, and the first to do so under the current two-region system.
Gustafson, the school record-holder in the shot put, also saw her season come to a close. She has qualified for back-to-back regional bids, advancing to the National Championships a year ago after placing 12th at the East regional.
For the second time in three days, Bowling Green's appearance at the regional meet was delayed due to rain and lightning in the area. Originally scheduled to begin at 6 pm, three rain delays stalled the beginning of competition for almost 90 minutes.
Wheat posted three legal throws with her best mark of 14.63m coming on her second attempt. She also recorded distances of 14.43m and 14.18m. Gustafson fouled on both her first and third throws, but launched her series-best mark of 14.63m on her second attempt.
"Makenzie came into the program at a point where we were pretty much at the beginning of building it," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "She was an immediate contributor, scoring at all eight conference championships (indoors and outdoors). You don't see a lot of people do that. And to be at this meet four years in a row, that doesn't happen a lot. She's meant a lot to us."
The result concludes Bowling Green's appearance at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round. The Falcons sent four student-athletes in three spots to regionals and redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny earned a trip to the National Championships by finishing 11th in the 10,000 with a school record time of 33:55.49 Thursday evening. BGSU will have a representative at nationals for the fifth consecutive year when Walny competes June 8 at 10:08 pm ET – the longest streak in program history.
