Rachel Walny Named Honorable Mention All-American
June 12, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Eugene, Ore. – Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny was named an honorable mention All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following her performance at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
Student-athletes earned first team USTFCCCA All-American honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in their events. Second team All-Americans were named for those who finish ninth through 16th and honorable mention is 17th through 24th. Walny placed 18th out of 24 in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
Walny ran a 34:00.61, which is the second fastest time in program history, and was the top Mid-American Conference finisher at the meet. Walny entered the meet ranked No. 22 among the 24 competitors but finished four spots higher than expected. She is the third Falcon to compete at the NCAA National Championships in the 10,000 and posted the best time by a BGSU runner at the meet.
For the fifth consecutive year, Bowling Green has sent a student-athlete to the NCAA National Championships. In 2013, Brooke Pleger placed seventh in the hammer throw and continued with a pair of third-place finishes in 2014 and 2015. A year ago, Aliyah Gustafson ended 24th in the shot put.
