BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team held its annual Orange Vs. Brown scrimmage on Friday afternoon (Sept. 22) at Cooper Pool. Five meet records were broken during the event, as the Orange ultimately captured the 2017 title with a 163-142 victory.
The teams were almost evenly split on event victories, with Orange members taking nine of the 17 events and Brown members winning eight. The Falcons' youth was also very well-represented. Six of the 17 events were won by freshmen, with sophomores earning victories in another three.Â
Meet records were broken in both relay events. In the 200 medley relay, the first swim of the day, the Orange team won in 1:47.95. Seniors Elodie Schrieber and Maria Galic swam the first and third legs, while junior Nicole Borgerding took the second. Freshman Ashleigh Franks anchored the team. The Brown team, anchored by freshman Monona Martin, finished just 3.39 seconds behind in 1:51.34.
The Brown 'A' team set the meet record in the 200 free relay. Megan Larson, who also swam in the medley relay, anchored and helped the team finish in 1:39.41. The Orange 'A' team, comprised of Galic, Franks, Lauren Sullivan, and Sarah Hennings (both freshmen), took second place by only a half-second (1:39.93).
Hennings set an individual record by winning the 100 butterfly in 0:57.87, while freshman Jordan Andrusak did the same in the 200 individual medley (2:08.06). Sophomore Talisa Lemke also broke a meet record when she posted a 138.70 in the 1-meter diving competition.
BGSU will return to Cooper Pool for the first dual meet of the 2017-18 season at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29. Ense's Falcons will compete against St. Francis University in that meet.
