BGSU grad earns 500th win of his historic coaching career
A former Bowling Green State University men's soccer great recently reached a coaching milestone. Leon "Bud" Lewis, the head coach at Wilmington College, picked up the 500th win of his illustrious coaching career earlier this month
On September 15, the Fightin' Quakers scored two minutes into the game and went on to a 4-0 victory over Wittenberg in the second game of the 2017 Wilmington Kiwanis Classic.
The win gave Lewis his 500th career victory. He became the third active coach to reach the coaching milestone, and is eighth all-time amongst all NCAA Division III coaches in victories.
A four-year letterwinner at BGSU, Lewis was a member of the 1972 Falcon team that went 7-2-3 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. He was a co-captain for coach Mickey Cochrane's team in 1974, and was named an NSCAA All-American that year.
A native of Penfield, N.Y. (Penfield H.S), Lewis was drafted by the Cincinnati Comets of the ASL (1975) and played one season with the Comets before joining the Buffalo Blazers of the Canadian Professional League.
After serving as a part-time coach at Wilmington in 1975 and '76, Lewis began his full-time position with the school in 1977 and has been there ever since. Lewis led his teams to 30 consecutive winning seasons including 19 conference/district championships and 10 national tournament appearances. During his tenure with the Fightin' Quakers, 25 players have been named to the NSCAA All-America teams and 10 players were named to the NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-America.
Lewis was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
