BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Jovannah East won two events and led the Falcons to victory over the defending Mid-American Conference champions on Friday night (Jan. 19) at a packed Anderson Arena. The Bowling Green State University tallied a 195.025, as opposed to the 193.950 of Eastern Michigan, and tied the school record for the earliest 195 in a season. The meet was the 2018 MAC opener for the Falcons, who are now 3-0 overall and 1-0 against MAC foes. EMU's record drops to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
Bowling Green started the meet by scoring a season-best 48.775 on the vault. That total included marks of 9.8-plus by East and Lauren DeMeno. They held the lead after the first rotation, during which EMU netted a 48.300 on the uneven bars, and they would never relinquish that edge. Overall, BGSU held the best team score in all four events and registered a season-best in three of the four. Individually, Falcon gymnasts finished first in all four events. East (vault, floor exercise) and India McPeak (balance beam) won their events outright, while Lexi Augustine shared the title on the uneven bars.
HEAD COACH KERRIE TURNER SAYS...
"I thought the team had a really strong start on vault. They stayed focused throughout the meet and were able to build on that. They had to really work for scores and capped it off with a fantastic floor rotation to get us past that 195 mark .... We're still ironing out some details and working to make our routines shine during competition. Our next several meets are on the road, so we need to be a good road team. We started the year off well on the road, and now we have several opportunities to build our RQS with those away scores."
NOTE OF THE NIGHT...
Sophomore Lexi Augustine is gaining confidence and getting better with every meet. In the first meet of the season at Michigan State, she set personal records on the floor and the bars, and she competed on the beam for the first time. Against Eastern Michigan, she established a brand new personal record on the floor (9.825) and tied her personal record on the bars (9.775). On the beam, she has progressed to a higher score in each meet, from 9.500 to 9.600 to tonight's 9.675. Augustine also earned the first two top-three finishes of her career, as she was co-champion on the bars and placed second in the floor exercise.

UP NEXT...
BGSU's next five meets are on the road. The Falcons begin that gauntlet next Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich. against Western Michigan. WMU is 1-0 in 2018 and faces Central Michigan tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 20). The Falcons own a 27-16-1 record in the all-time series in the Broncos but have lost three in a row since their last win in Kalamazoo in 2014. Following the trip to Kalamazoo, Bowling Green heads to Colorado for a quad meet at Denver on Feb. 3 that includes Ball State and BYU. The Falcons also have the Elevate the Stage meet and dual meets at Ball State and New Hampshire before their next event at Anderson Arena.
