KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team set a slew of personal records and earned a season-best team score on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 28) in a dual meet at Western Michigan. However, the Broncos rallied during the final rotation and handed BGSU its first loss of the season, 195.675-195.550. The Falcons fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while WMU is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the MAC. Both teams are part of a three-way tie for third in the MAC behind Central Michigan (3-0) and Ball State (1-0).
BGSU began the day with a season-best 48.725 on the uneven bars. The Falcons' best individual score to date on that apparatus had been 9.775. Leslie Delgado matched that to lead off the meet, then Laura Mitchell (9.800) and Alexandra Fochler (9.825) exceeded it. In the second rotation, the Falcons moved to the vault, where they posted another season-best team score. All four counting scores were 9.700 or above, including a trio of 9.8s. Jovannah East earned a 9.875 and won the vault competition for the fourth straight meet.Â
In the second half of the meet, both teams were phenomenal in the floor exercise. Neither team had to count a score lower than 9.800, and the event title was shared by East and WMU's Rachael Underwood, each of whom scored 9.875. The Falcons competed in the floor exercise first and thus carried a lead into the final rotation. However, WMU finished ahead when BGSU could not match the Broncos' performance on the balance beam. WMU won that event 48.800-48.675.
HEAD COACH KERRIE TURNER SAYS...
"The team pulled together today and achieved a strong road score. I am disappointed we could not come up with the win, but it certainly was not due to effort and focus. Our student- athletes were all in from the first routine to the last routine.Â
Certainly this gives us an opportunity to continue to build road scores for our NCAA regional qualifying score."
