The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team shot better than 64 percent from the field over the final three quarters, posting an 88-74 win over Loyola University Chicago Tuesday (Nov. 20). The School Day game, held before a near-capacity crowd, was held at the Stroh Center.
Freshman Morgan McMillen scored a game-high 25 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. McMillen went 12-for-13 at the free-throw line on the day, hitting 9-of-10 shots from the stripe over the game's final 10 minutes.
As a team, BGSUÂ (3-1) was 23-for-29 from the line on the day.
Sophomore Angela Perry had 24 points in the contest, going 11-for-14 from the field. Freshman Kadie Hempfling had a double-double, with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while senior Sydney Lambert just missed a double-double, scoring nine points and pulling down a career-high 10 boards. Lambert also had five assists in the win.
Ellie Rice scored 18 points to pace four double-digit scorers for the Ramblers (2-2).
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons never trailed in the game. Freshman Kadie Hempfling grabbed an offensive rebound, was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws just 30 seconds into the game, and after the visitors' Ellie Rice answered with two shots from the stripe, freshman Morgan McMillen's three-point play gave BG the lead for good.
• McMillen's layup began a 7-0 run for the Falcons, as Hempfling took a pass from redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak and hit a turnaround layup, and true soph Angela Perry scored inside for a 9-2 lead.
• Rice knocked down a three-point try to snap the run, but out of the game's first media timeout, Hempfling threw the ball inside to Perry for another layup and an 11-5 lead.
• Then, neither team scored for nearly four minutes, but after Kat Nolan converted a layup for the Ramblers, Glowniak grabbed a teammate's missed shot and flipped the ball to junior Andrea Cecil for a layup in the final seconds of the period, giving BG a 13-7 lead.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Cecil drove and kicked the ball out to Hempfling for a three-pointer and a 16-9 lead, and after Loyola answered with a layup, sophomore Madisen Parker scored in transition for an 18-11 advantage.
• The Ramblers' Abby O'Connor hit from downtown, and Allison Day's layup cut BG's lead to two points, but senior Sydney Lambert knocked down a driving layup in traffic.
• Moments later, Hempfling threw the ball inside to Perry for a layup, and Lambert knocked down a three-ball from the right side for a 25-18 BG lead.
• The visitors looked to rally, but Parker found Perry for layups on back-to-back BG possessions. After Rice hit a layup, however, the visitors got a stop, and O'Connor's jumper with 17 seconds to go cut BG's lead to just two points, 29-27, at the intermission.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Glowniak made a nifty move across the lane and hit a short banker on the opening possession of the period, and Lambert fed McMillen for a jumper and a 33-27 lead.
• Glowniak drove down the lane and scored, and McMillen dribbled around the arc, pulled up and hit a triple to keep BG's lead at six.
• McMillen hit a driving layup, but O'Connor's three-pointer cut the BG lead to just three points. Cecil found Perry for a shot off glass, but Janae Gonzales knocked down a long-range try, and the Falcons' advantage was just 42-40 midway through the quarter.
• Perry went to work, hitting another shot inside, and Lambert drained a pair of free-throw tries out of the media timeout for a 46-40 lead.
• When Lambert made the 'extra pass' to Perry for a straightaway trey, BG's lead was 51-44. The visitors got a jumper from Day, but Cecil's cross-court pass found Lambert in the left corner, and the senior drilled a long-distance attempt to give the Falcons a 54-46 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The final quarter saw the teams combine for 62 points. McMillen opened the scoring with a layup, then hit a jumper inside for a 10-point lead, BG's largest of the game to that point.
• Rice hit a three-ball from the left wing, but a steal by Perry led to a transition bucket, as Lambert fired the ball to Cecil for an easy layup and a 60-51 lead.
• That lead reached 11 points on BG's next trip down the floor, as Lambert's lob found sophomore Sierra Thompson for a layup at the 5:38 mark.
• After Nolan hit a layup for the visitors, Perry made an 'and-one' shot, converting the free throw for a 65-53 lead with 5:11 to go.
• The Ramblers looked to cut into the BG lead, but Perry scored inside yet again, Hempfling converted a putbck, and Perry got a nifty baby hook shot to go, giving the Falcons a 71-59 lead with 3:37 remaining.
• Perry lobbed the ball inside to Hempfling for an easy layup and a 73-62 lead with 3:16 left, and most of the remaining time was spent at the free-throw line.
