Late Free Throws Lift CCU Over Foul-Plagued Falcons, 81-80
November 23, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Lambert leads BG with 21 points in opening game of CCU Tournament
DJ Williams made a pair of free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining, lifting host Coastal Carolina University to an 81-80 win over the foul-plagued Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Friday afternoon (Nov. 23). The game, the opening contest of the Coastal Carolina Tournament, was held at the HTC Center.
Williams led all players with 26 points on the afternoon, and paced four double-digit scorers for the Chanticleers (3-1). Senior Sydney Lambert led the Falcons (3-2) with 21 points, while freshman Morgan McMillen had 15 points and sophomore Angela Perry 12 for the Brown and Orange. Four BGSU post players fouled out of the game.
The Falcons led for the entire afternoon, but as the BG bench grew shorter and shorter, the Chanticleers crept closer and closer. Williams' free throws marked the only time CCU led all day.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a tough loss. We needed to make some plays at the end of the game, and we didn't. We need to learn from this, get better and move on."
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• BGSU got off to a lightning-quick start. Senior Sydney Lambert hit a three-point field goal on the game's opening possession, and junior Andrea Cecil, who assisted on that Lambert three, made a triple of her own on BG's next possession after an offensive rebound by freshman Kadie Hempfling.
• Lambert hit a pull-up jumper in the lane, and Hempfling found classmate Morgan McMillen for a corner three and an 11-0 lead.
• The Chanticleers got on the board with a free throw at the 6:07 mark, and DJ Williams scored on a transition layup just over 30 seconds later. The home team's run reached eight when Tiarra Davis knocked down a three-pointer, but Lambert stole the ball, and sophomore Angela Perry scored inside.
• Then, Hempfling's putback gave the Falcons a 15-8 lead, and McMillen drilled a step-back three to give the visitors a 10-point advantage at the 2:18 mark.
• In a harbinger of things to come, however, the Falcons were beginning to get into some foul trouble. Cecil had picked up her second foul with 2:53 to go, and Perry was whistled for her second with 2:11 left in the period.
• But, redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak scored on a nifty driving layup for a 20-12 lead, and Lambert took a pass from soph Madisen Parker and hit a three-point try from the right side, giving the Brown and Orange a 23-12 lead. The Chants' Jamie Williams split a pair of free throws to close the first-quarter scoring.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Hempfling began the second-period scoring, as Lambert's 'extra pass'' gave the freshman an open three-point try that she drained. BG's lead was 26-13.
• That lead reached 15 as Glowniak pulled up for a right-side jumper.
• Caitlin Roche hit a three for the hosts, but Lambert quickly countered with a transition layup. But, CCU then scored seven-straight points, capped by Mary Visone's putback. The Falcons, leading by a 30-23 score, used a timeout.
• McMillen stopped that run, taking a handoff from Parker and hitting a right-wing triple, and moments later, McMillen lobbed the ball inside to Cecil for a layup and a 37-26 lead.
• DJ Williams, however, answered with an and-one layup. The free throw was no good, but on the ensuing possession, A BG pass was off the mark, and Cecil was called for her third foul as she attempted to chase down the loose ball.
• A steal and layup by Roche cut the BG lead to 37-33, and when Naheria Hamilton scored inside, the Falcons led by just two. But, Lambert drove down the lane and got her shot to do, and the senior point guard then found McMillen on the break, with McMillen's triple giving the Falcons a 42-35 lead.
• The hosts hit a pair of free throws, but Lambert got the ball to Parker, who hit a three-pointer just before the horn sounded, giving BG a 45-37 lead at the break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Hempfling was called for her third foul of the day on the Chanticleers' opening possession of the quarter, but after a pair of free throws cut BG's lead to six, Lambert took McMillen's pass and connected from beyond the arc.
• But, another foul was called on Hempfling at the 7:53 mark, sending her to the bench for the remainder of the period.
• The seas parted for Cecil, who hit a wide-open layup for a 50-41 lead, but the junior was assessed her fourth foul at the 6:07 mark.Â
• McMillen lobbed the ball inside to Perry for a bucket, and Perry pounded it in to Glowniak for a turnaround shot off glass and a 54-43 lead. But, Glowniak was called for her fourth foul at the 4:38 mark, and DJ Williams converted a three-point play.
• After a BG miss, McMillen forced the Chants into a bad pass, and Perry caught the ball in the paint and laid it up and in. When freshman Molly Dever took Lambert's pass and knocked down a three-point try, BGSU's lead was 59-48, and the hosts used a timeout.
• The teams traded points over the remainder of the period, with Perry grabbing an offensive board and converting a silky-smooth putback; Parker coming up with a defensive rebound after a textbook box-out, then hitting a pair of free throws after she was fouled; and Parker knocking down two more charity tosses after being fouled at the top of the arc. BG led, 65-54, after 30 minutes.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Roche's three-pointer was followed by a DJ Williams fast-break layup, and the Falcons' lead was down to six after only 90 seconds of the fourth quarter had elapsed.
• Lambert made yet another long-range shot after receiving Cecil's pass, but Roche connected from long distance again, and BG's lead was 68-62.
• Hempfling put the perfect amount of spin on a layup, as the ball hit the glass and went through the hoop, but after Hamilton scored at the other end, Hempfling somehow was called for an offensive foul as she went around her would-be defender. The foul was Hempfling's fifth, and came with 6:18 left.
• Just 38 seconds later, Glowniak was whistled for foul number five, and a pair of free throws cut BG's lead to 70-66. Cecil went to the line and knocked down a pair of shots, and Perry hit a nice turnaround layup. But, DJ Williams scored on back-to-back possessions, and it was a four-point game once again.
• McMillen, however, dribbled around a Perry screen and hit a three. The Chants answered with a bucket, but Lambert was fouled and splits the ensuing free throws for a 78-72 lead with 2:38 to go.
• DJ Williams and the hosts kept coming, though. The junior hit an 'and-one' layup with 2:15 remaining, and Cecil was called for her fifth foul on the play. The Falcons led by just two points.
• Williams missed the free throw, but the Chanticleers got the rebound and Roche fired a potential go-ahead three-pointer as the clock hit two minutes to go. The triple try was off the mark, and Perry came up with the rebound and was fouled. She hit both charity tosses for an 80-76 lead with 1:55 remaining.
• Torrie Cash drew a foul and split two shots at the line. She made the first, and after she missed the second, CCU came up with the rebound. But, DJ Wiliiams was called for an offensive foul. The Falcons took a timeout with 1:35 remaining.
• On the ensuing possession, a BG layup attempt was no good, and DJ Williams scored to cut BG's lead to a single point with 51.8 seconds to go.
• The next possession saw the ball knocked loose after McMillen threw it inside to Perry. Several players from each team hit the floor battling for the loose ball, and BG came up with it. McMillen heaved a long shot toward the basket, but it was off the mark as the shot clock expired, and it was CCU ball with 20.1 seconds left.
• DJ Williams went to the line after the Falcons' 25th foul of the day was called with 5.9 seconds to go, and the junior hit both free throws to give her team the lead for the first time.
• BG called a timeout, and after the break, McMillen inbounded the ball near midcourt. The Falcons got the ball to Lambert, but the senior's three-point attempt was just off the mark. Freshman Sydney Palermo came up with the rebound, but time expired before Palermo could get her shot off.
