Falcons Cross Country Programs Set For Regionals
November 06, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country programs will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals. The women's team will be the first to participate at the event with their 6k event beginning at 11:15 a.m. The men's team will follow an hour later at 12:15 p.m., participating in the 10k event.
Moving Momentum
Following the MAC Championships, BGSU will enter the regional level with confidence. As a team, the men's program captured a second place finish in Toledo, while Noah Schaub and Tyler Phillips led the way individually, coming in second and third respectively. On the women's side, Rachel Walny ran away with a third place individual finish at the event.
Regional Rankings
The men's program will enter the event after moving up in the Great Lakes Region rankings. After their second place finish at the MAC Championships, the men's team moved into the No. 12 spot in the region.
A Look At The Competition
The Great Lakes Region will feature some of the best competition the Falcons have seen all year. Wisconsin (Big Ten) and Notre Dame (ACC) are both coming off of conference championships on the men's side and sit atop the regional standings. For the women's competition, Michigan will headline the event after capturing their third consecutive Big Ten Championship.
The Course
The men's team had an opportunity earlier in the year to race in Terre Haute, but only on an 8k course. In that event on Sept. 15, the team placed in third of the eight participating teams. This will be the first time the team has competed in a 10k this season. The women's did not travel to Terre Haute, but have competed in three 6k events this year.
Awards Watch
The top-25 finishers in both the men and women's events will receive All-Region honors following the event. At last year's competition, Rachel Walny was named to the All-Region team for the third consecutive year. Noah Schaub finished only nine spots shy of being named to the team as well.
Quotes From The Coach
"The expectations for Friday at the Great Lakes Region Championships is to be a top ten team," said Assistant Coach Juan Carrillo. "We have three freshman in our regional squad so this will be great experience for them competing against some of the best programs in the country."
NCAA Championship Qualifying
Members of both teams will be attempting to capture an individual qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships at this event. For both men and women's there will be four spots up for grabs. Rachel Walny has qualified for Nationals in track and field the past two years, but has yet to reach that level in cross country. The last time BGSU had a national qualifier for the women's side was 1998 and for the men's side was 1986.
