Junior Andrea Cecil had a game-high 19 points to pace three double-digit scorers for the Falcons. Cecil was 4-for-6 from three-point range on the night.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Morgan McMillen had 17 points, and senior Sydney Lambert scored 14 points and dished out a team-leading five assists.
Tuesday's contest was the BGSU debut for head coach Robyn Fralick, a native of nearby Okemos, Mich.
Jenna Allen had 17 points to pace five double-figure scorers for the Spartans, and she had a double-double, with a game-high 15 rebounds. Taryn McCutcheon had 16 points and 12 assists for the hosts.
The Falcons trailed by 16 points at the half, but the Spartans went on a 12-0 run to take a 30-point lead, 61-31, midway through the third quarter. MSU's lead was still 30 points several minutes later, but BG slowly started chipping away.
Lambert's three-pointer with 25 seconds left in the quarter cut the MSU lead to 70-46, and the Falcons then came out running to begin the fourth quarter. Lambert and freshman Molly Dever sandwiched fast-break buckets around a McMillen triple, and Cecil hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc. When McMillen hit a driving reverse layup, the Falcons had scored the first 12 points of the quarter, and the MSU lead was down to 12, at 70-58.
But, Shay Colley snapped a 15-0 BG run with a three-pointer, and Nia Clouden's three-point play gave the Spartans an 18-point lead as the home team began to pull away.
Dever had seven points in her BGSU debut, while fellow freshman Kadie Hempfling had four points and three assists.
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Spartans got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first 10 points, and BG took a timeout with just 1:53 gone.
• But, following that run, the Falcons outscored MSU, 15-10, over the remainder of the quarter.
• Freshman Morgan McMillen muscled a layup up and in for the Falcons' first points of the season, and moments later, she fed junior Andrea Cecil for a right-wing three pointer. When McMillen hit a triple of her own, the Spartans' lead had been cut to 12-8.
• The Spartans countered with a quick 5-0 run, but Cecil's left-side three-ball barely moved the net, and after sophomore Sierra Thompson forced an MSU over-and-back violation, senior Sydney Lambert knocked down a jumper to cut the BG deficit to 17-13.
• McMillen got the ball inside to junior Jane Uecker for a layup in traffic, again getting the Falcons within four points, before the Spartans' Nia Clouden split a pair of free throws for a 20-15 MSU lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Mardrekia Cook scored the first four points of the period, but McMillen knocked down a right-wing triple try.
• MSU's Sidney Cooks made a pair of three-pointers of her own to give the hosts a 14-point advantage, but freshman Molly Dever made a driving, and-1 layup midway through the period, hitting the free throw to get BG within 32-21.
• Freshman Kadie Hempfling grabbed an offensive rebound and dished the ball to a cutting Dever for a reverse layup, and after MSU's Taryn McCutchion responded with a three-pointer, Hempfling took a pass from Lambert and hit a layup.
• MSU took a 41-25 lead into the halftime break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Cecil spotted McMillen for an easy layup on the first possession of the period, but MSU answered with a layup of their own, followed by another trey.
• Cecil hit a driving layup, and Dever fed the junior for another bucket, but the Spartans hit three three-pointers within a span of under two minutes, and Shay Colley's layup gave the hosts a 54-31 lead.
• That MSU run reached 11-0 and the lead was 60-31 midway through the period. Cecil knocked down a three-ball from the top of the arc, Lambert hit a driving pull-up jumper, and Cecil knocked down a transition layup, but BG was unable to cut into the Spartans' lead.
• Lambert hit a driving coast-to-coast layup, and redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak did work near the basket and hit a turnaround one-hander. When Lambert drained a three-point try from in front of the BG bench, MSU's lead, which had been as high as 30 points, was 24, at 70-46.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons were off and running to begin the final quarter. Lambert hit a floating jumper, then found McMillen for a three-pointer in front of the BG bench.
• Dever came up with a steal near midcourt and got the ball to Lambert. Lambert drove to the basket, found her progress impeded, then flipped the ball to Dever for a layup.
• Sierra Thompson fired a pass to Cecil at the top of the arc, and McMillen knocked down a nifty reverse layup. Suddenly, the Spartans' lead was down to 12, at 70-58, with 6:23 to go.
• But, Colley ended MSU's drought with a three-pointer, and Cloudon's three-point play gave the Spartans an 18-point advantage.
• Hempfling hit a reverse layup off of a Lambert inbounds pass, but the hosts extended the lead out to 23 points before Hempfling came up with an offensive board and kicked it to McMillen for a shot-fake and a two-pointer. But, the hosts slowly extended the lead back out.
