Rachel Walny Breaks School Record At GVSU Holiday Open
December 07, 2018 | Women's Track and Field
Allendale, Mich. – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Rachel Walny broke a school record Friday, running the 5000 in 16:26.14 at the GVSU Holiday Open to shatter the previous BGSU best by more than 14 seconds.
Walny's time was more than 20 seconds better than her previous best time of 16:46.27 and broke a school record that had stood for 32 years. Sara Collas ran 16:40.17 in 1986 and maintained the record until Friday. Walny entered the meet with the second, third and fourth-fastest times in BGSU history.
It is the second school record for Walny in track and field. She is BGSU's all-time fastest 10,000 meter runner in outdoor track & field. She also holds school records in both 5000 meter and 6000 meter cross country distances.
"This is a great payoff and ending for another consistent fall for Rachel," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "This is her second school record on the track and we are hoping for more to come."
Senior Kelsie Mothersead also ran the 5000 at the GVSU Holiday Open, posting a time of 19:42.83.
Eastern Michigan's Sydney Meyers won the race at 16:15.04. Toledo's Athena Welsh finished third, just ahead of Walny with a time of 16:24.28. Walny, however, defeated 11 other Mid-American Conference runners. A year ago, her time of 16:26.14 would have finished second at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships and would have placed her among the top 75 nationally.
BGSU will return to action Jan. 12 at the Wolverine Invitational before hosting Toledo in a dual meet Jan. 18 at 5:00 pm at Perry Field House.
