DENVER, Colo. -- Several Falcon gymnasts produced sterling performances, but the team could not overcome a slow start as Bowling Green finished fourth in a quad meet at the University of Denver on Saturday night (Feb. 3). The team matched its season-best marks on the vault and uneven bars; however, they had to count a low-scoring routine during the floor exercise in the opening rotation. The resulting 48.100 was more than a point lower than their season-best 49.150 last weekend at Western Michigan. BGSU concluded the meet with a 194.525, which fell short of #11 Denver (196.750), Ball State (195.450), and #18 BYU (194.875). The loss drops BGSU's 2018 record to 3-4.Â
Sophomore Jovannah East added to her highlight reel with a spectacular vault that earned a 9.925 from the judges. That score is a new personal record and moves her into a tie for second place on BGSU's all-time list behind only former NCAA champion Marny Oestreng (9.950). Meanwhile, freshman Alexandra Fochler continued to show improvement on the bars. Her 9.875 on Saturday, which tied for fourth place, is her third personal record in the last four meets. It is also a team best for the season and tied for sixth place in BGSU history. Four other Falcons tied or set new personal records, including freshmen Nacaida Kearns and Elena Lawson on the vault.
HEAD COACH KERRIE TURNER SAYS...
"We had a tough start during the floor exercise, but I felt the team worked hard to focus and come back strong. We will get back in the gym and work on any mistakes made as we prepare for our next competition at Ball State."
