MUNCIE, Ind. -- Bowling Green State University gymnasts could not maintain their lead over Ball State through the final rotation and suffered a loss in their third consecutive meet. The Falcons came out of the gate strong with a season-best team effort on the uneven bars, then regained form in the floor exercise by surpassing 49 for the third time. However, the balance beam lineup suffered three falls, and that proved to be the difference. The Cardinals finished with a 195.000 to BGSU's 194.275. The Falcons are now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in MAC meets, while Ball State improves to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the MAC. Bowling Green's team average drops to 194.692 through six meets; the team's initial Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) is 194.530.
Lexi Augustine and Laura Mitchell began the meet by sharing second place on the beam with a pair of 9.850s. Augustine earned a new personal record, while Mitchell marked her best routine of the season to date. Augustine also earned fourth place (9.825) in the floor exercise. Mitchell completed her best meet since the 2017 MAC Championships with a trio of routines that earned 9.800 or above, including a team-best 9.800 on the balance beam that earned third place.
Sophomore Jovannah East continued her stellar run on the vault and the floor with another pair of first-place finishes. She earned her fourth outright victory of 2018 on the vault with a 9.850. She has finished first and scored at least a 9.850 in all six meets on that apparatus. On the floor, she tied her season-best with a 9.875 and shared the title with Ball State's Tia Kiaku. She now has nine first-place finishes this season. However, it was the routine she could not complete that was indicative of BGSU's struggles in the final rotation. On the beam, East slipped to the floor late in her routine and took home a 9.325. That was the third fall of the rotation for the Falcons, one of which occurred during a dismount.
HEAD COACH KERRIE TURNER SAYS...
"While we had the lead through three events, our beam rotation was a disaster. I am disappointed the mental focus wasn't stronger going in to the last event. We will need to get back in the gym and work harder to correct those mistakes. We have a strong team, and it didn't show on the competition floor today."
