March 14, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green tennis program will return home to the Perrysburg Tennis Center this weekend for the first time since Jan. 17 as it hosts UIC and Wright State in a pair of dual matches this weekend. The Falcons will first host the Flames at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 16, before welcoming Wright State in a 5:30 p.m. first serve on Saturday, March 17. Both events are free to attend.
Most recently, the Falcons faced in-state rival No. 23 Ohio State and fell by a 7-0 score (March 13). Prior to taking on the nationally-ranked Buckeyes, Bowling Green traveled to California to compete against Azusa Pacific where they earned one doubles and two singles victories. Junior Paula Comella and sophomore Marharita-Sophia Tavpash earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Ayumi Sasaki earned a point for the Orange and Brown at No. 4 singles. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Sasaki first downed her opponent 6-4, and closed out with a straight set win when she shutout her opponent 6-0 for the victory. Also notable, the entire Falcon roster was able to compete as freshmen Theresa Wassmann and Sidney Reineke competed in exhibition play, where Wassmann earned her second victory of the season.
Last season against Wright State the Falcons fell in a narrow 4-3 final on the road, although were able to earn three singles and one doubles win on the day. Comella, Sasaki and Polina Radeva all earned singles victories in three sets, while the pairing of Comella / Tavpash was able to down their opponents 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The last time the Falcons faced UIC was Feb. 6, 2016, where they dropped a 4-3 loss at home. Comella was able to earn a singles win in the No. 1 slot, while Comella and Radeva earned doubles victories with their partners.
A nine-player roster, UIC is led by 17-year head coach Shannon Tully and three seniors in Melika LeBlanc, Miranda Rodriguez Dias de Leon and Bianca Zuzu. A seasoned team, the Flames roster only includes one freshman in Amelia Guevremont, in addition to just two sophomores. With a 4-3 record on the season, UIC is currently on a three-match win streak since being shutout at Ball State 7-0 (Feb. 16). Most recently, UIC picked up a 7-0 win at Illinois State, and will face Western Michigan on the road on March 15, prior to taking on the Falcons on Friday, March 16.
With its eight player roster, Wright State is led by its lone senior in Karoline Haller and third year head coach Eric Burns. A large four-player freshman class, the Raiders are 9-8 on the season and are currently on a five-match win streak dating back to a 4-3 win over Illinois State (Feb. 24). Most recently, Wright State downed LaSalle 7-0 at home by winning all six singles matches as well as two of three doubles matches.
This week's pair of matches mark two of eight total home competitions for the Bowling Green tennis program this season, as well as the final non-conference matches of the season prior to beginning Mid-American Conference competition next week against Northern Illinois (March 23).
