March 28, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green tennis program (10-5, 2-0 MAC) remains at home this weekend as it continues Mid-American Conference play against Akron and Buffalo. The Falcons will look to extend its win streak to five straight versus Akron (12-8, 1-1 MAC) on Friday, March 30 in a 1 p.m. first serve, followed by Buffalo (9-3, 2-0 MAC) on Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. Both matches are free to attend at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
Last weekend, the Falcons opened MAC play at Northern Illinois and claimed a 6-1 win on the road. It marked the first win over Northern Illinois since the 2014 season, while the Falcons tallied two doubles and five singles wins on the day. When returning home, the Falcons defeated two-time defending MAC Regular Season Champions Ball State in 4-3 final, where Bowling Green earned its first win over the Cardinals since 2013 to improve to a 6-0 record at home with one doubles and four singles victories.
The Falcons will look for redemption as last season Bowling Green fell to Buffalo 7-0 on the road (April 14) as well as to Akron 6-1 (April 16). The Falcons earned a doubles win against the Zips by the duo of Paula Comella and Marharita-Sophia Tavpash. A native of Lviv, Ukraine, Tavpash earned a second win on the day when she downed her Akron opponent at No. 3 singles as well.
This season, the Zips are off to a 12-8 record in the 2017-18 campaign and are 1-1 in MAC play after most recently marking a 5-2 win over Toledo. A nine player team, Akron is led by eighth-season head coach Brandon Padgett, who earned MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2017 after guiding the team to a 23-4 record. Against Toledo, Akron registered two doubles and four singles wins squeak past the Rockets, including wins from two if its three seniors.
Like the Falcons, Buffalo heads into the weekend undefeated in conference play with a 2-0 league mark in addition to its 9-3 overall record. Coming off of 5-2 and 4-3 wins against Toledo and Eastern Michigan, respectively, the Bulls will face Miami prior to the Falcons when it travels to Oxford, Ohio for competition on Friday, March 30. A large 10 player roster, Buffalo is led by two seniors in Lolade Ogungbesan and Tanja Stojanovska, as well as a five-player junior class. Head coach Kristen Maines is in her sixth season as head coach of the Bulls, after leading Buffalo to the 2017 MAC Tournament title.
The Akron and Buffalo matches mark the conclusion of a three-match home stand for the Falcons, before the program returns home for the final home match of the season against Eastern Michigan on Sunday, April 8.
