EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost in walk-off fashion on Wednesday (March 7) night at the University of Evansville. In the 12th inning, UE's Troy Beilsmith hit a two-out single to give the Purple Aces the 3-2 win.
"I thought we fought for 12 innings," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "This was a great college baseball game, and unfortunately, we were on the losing side of it. Our pitching staff did a tremendous job tonight."
Evansville started the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth, but Bowling Green countered with two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.
The inning started with a Nick Neibauer single followed by a Randy Righter double. Brad Croy then grounded out, but was able to score Neibauer and move Righter over to third in the process. After a strikeout, Jeff Scott delivered a two-out single through the left side.
The score would remain at 2-1 in BGSU's favor until two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Down to their final out, the Purple Aces tied the game with a single to left field. Croy left the go-ahead runner on second with a strikeout. In total, Croy registered six strikeouts over his 2.2 innings of work.
Daniel Buratto gave the Falcons scoreless frames in both the 10th and 11th innings. In both frames, the Bowling Green offense left the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the 12th, Evansville loaded the bases with no outs. Two-consecutive force outs at home gave the Falcons a chance to escape the inning, but Beilsmith's single to left ended the game. Buratto was tagged with the loss, despite allowing just three hits over 2.2 innings.
David Stopp got the start for Bowling Green. He allowed just one hit over 2.2 innings. He struck out three and walked three. Damon Egnor came on next, and allowed just one run over 2.0 innings on the mound. Lefty Chandler Stillings turned in 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Bowling Green enters this weekend's three-game series at Western Kentucky with a 3-10 record. Evansville is now 5-5 on the season.
