Volleyball's Coach Tomic Selected to Attend Marine Corps Coaching Workshop
April 18, 2018 | Volleyball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green volleyball head coach Danijela Tomic has been selected to attend the four-day Marine Corps Coaching Workshop in Quantico, Va., from May 16-19. The annual workshop provides selected coaches an opportunity to learn how Marine Officers are recruited, screened, and developed into leaders, while Tomic is among five Division I level coaches selected to attend the 2018 workshop.
"It is an honor to be selected as one of five coaches for this great educational and leadership opportunity provided by the U.S. Marines Corps and the AVCA," Coach Tomic said. "As a coach, my role is to lead and mentor our student-athletes and staff, but to also help develop their leadership skills that will serve them well beyond volleyball. Having this opportunity to learn from the Marine Corps leaders, who are best of the best, and then implement some of their processes and principles within our BGSU Volleyball program, is beyond exciting."
The Coaches Workshop, coordinated by American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), is a four-day intensive leadership workshop designed to teach coaches from across the nation Marine Corps small unit leadership tactics, techniques and procedures. The mission of the AVCA is to advance the sport of volleyball with AVCA coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy and professional development. The AVCA provides education to volleyball coaches, recognition of elite players and coaches, promotion of volleyball competitions throughout the world, and networking opportunities for volleyball products and service providers.
The workshop includes motivating workouts, lectures, leadership courses, tours and other activities lead by Marine leaders. During the workshop, coaches will gain an understanding of Marine Corps' leadership traits and principle that they can translate to their teams to foster a culture of leadership among student-athletes. The workshop concludes with the Commanding General's presentation of certificates.
Tomic was most recently named 2017 MAC Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons to its first MAC Regular Season title since 1992 by a league mark of 13-3 in her sixth year at the helm of the program. In the last two seasons, Tomic has also developed a Bowling Green program that has earned every MAC individual postseason award including 2017 MAC Player of the Year (Kallie Seimet), 2016 MAC Freshman of the Year (Isabelle Marciniak), 2016 MAC Setter of the Year (Isabelle Marciniak), and back-to-back MAC Defensive Player of the Years (2016 – Madeline Garda, 2017 – Kallie Seimet).
