BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated in 11 innings on Friday (May 11) afternoon by Northern Illinois University. The Huskies plated a run in the top of the 11th inning to claim a 4-3 victory in the series opener at Steller Field.
NIU's Hunter Bross proved to be the difference, as the Huskie outfielder hit a solo home run in the 11th to give Northern Illinois the victory. Bowling Green drops to 10-34 (5-15 MAC) with the loss, while Northern Illinois improves to 18-31 (7-15 MAC) with the win.
"Zac and Kody did a heck of a job all day long," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Our bats just didn't do much of anything today, and we had more than enough chances to win that ballgame. We just can't seem to make that one big play, or get that one big hit."
NIU scored single runs in the first, second and fifth, before the Falcons tied the game with a three-spot in the bottom half of the fifth. Two errors on one play scored a pair of runs for BGSU, and then Dylan Dohanos tied the game with a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze bunt.
Bowling Green and Northern Illinois are scheduled to continue the three-game series tomorrow (May 12) afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
