Former BGSU Baseball Falcon Orel Hershiser To Receive Star On Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Hershiser’s Star To Be Dedicated On August 13
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will honor former BGSU Falcon and 1988 World Series MVP Orel Hershiser with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The dedication of the star is set for Thursday, Aug. 13 at 2:30 p.m. EST with a live stream of the event available at www.walkoffame.com. Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas will serve as the emcee with guest speakers including Clayton Kershaw, Joe Davis, Dave Roberts and Jaime Jarrin.
A 1985 BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Hershiser holds the last no-hitter in program history by a single player, doing so against Kent State on May 4, 1979. He went on to be drafted in the 17th round of the 1979 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and made his Major League debut on September 1, 1983, earning a save in his first appearance to clinch the 1983 National League West crown. During his career, Hershiser racked up a host of honors, including winning the 1988 World Series and being named the World Series MVP while adding a Cy Young Award and a Golden Glove during his career.
Hershiser's mark on baseball, which includes the Major League Baseball record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched at 59, extends beyond the playing surface. For the last two decades, Hershiser has been in the booth, becoming an Emmy Award-winning and multi-time Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association award-winning broadcaster and baseball analyst. He served as the color analyst for ABC/ESPN's coverage of the Little League World Series and from 2007-13 was part of the NCAA College World Series coverage for ABC/ESPN while also adding ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball to his list of appearances from 2010-13. From there, he helped launch a network for the Los Angeles Dodgers with SportsNet LA.
In 2020, Hershiser reintegrated himself into the fabric of Bowling Green baseball, serving as part of an alumni group that has been a driving component in the program's revival and facility improvements. In Spring 2025, Hershiser was honored with an honorary doctorate degree in leadership studies from Bowling Green, recognizing his ongoing and unwavering support of the University, including speaking at all three Saturday Commencement ceremonies surrounding receiving his honorary doctorate.
