Falcons Start Cross Country Season Strong At Toledo Rockets Invitational

TOLEDO, Ohio - The first meet of the season for the Falcon cross country teams is in the books, creating nice momentum for both the men and women moving forward. The women were paced by Katerina Shuble who finished 14th with a time of 14:43.8 in the 4k. For the men, Noah Schaub led the way in the 6k, coming in second with a time of 18:46.4 with freshman Cesar Arellano placing not far behind in eighth with a time of 19:00.7.
The Field
The men's side of the meet saw 62 runners compete from six MAC schools. Eastern Michigan took first at the meet followed by Buffalo in second. The Falcons were able to come away with a third place finish as a team, making for a solid start to the season. Ohio, Kent State, and Toledo rounded out the men's race.
The women had 76 runners participate, with Toledo coming away with first. Ohio, Eastern Michigan, Buffalo, and Kent State rounded out the team standings. BGSU didn't record a team score, but had runners compete unattached, as well as two who ran attached.
Women's 4k Event
The women started the season strong, setting the tone for the year. This was the first 4k event for all runners participating. Going into next week, the Falcons will look to improve on this race's success along with the additions of a few runners who didn't participate at the event. Having three Falcons place in the top 25 is a good sign moving forward and gives solid foundation to build upon.
Men's 6k Event
FULL RESULTS
The men came out strong and pushed through together with many finishing within a few spots of another BGSU runner. This was the first 6k event for all of the participating athletes. The were led by Noah Schaub who was able to improve to second from his fourth place finish as a sophomore two years ago in the same event. The men's team will also return to BG next week with the hopes of continuing this week's success with their eyes set on finishing first.
Quotes of the Coach
After the race Coach Lou Snelling was able to reflect on the start to the season. Â "Overall, it was about as expected across the board," said Snelling. "Our main thing from this point is just building. The focus now is what do we have to do to get better in a week's time."
Assistant Coach Juan Carrillo also took away positives from the race for the season. "I like that we run together for most of the race," said Carrillo. "Some guys made moves and didn't hesitate."
Up Next
BGSU's next meet brings them home to Bowling Green in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener on Friday, Sept. 7. The men's team will start the meet at 5:00 p.m. and the women will follow at 5:35 p.m.

- Close behind Shuble was Sarah Hunsley, who also ran unattached, recording a time of 14:46.6, which was good enough to place 17th.
- Next for the Falcons was Jessi Lindstrom, participating unattached, who came in 23rd having a time of 14:56.8
- Allie Zofkie, Allison Holahan, and Lauren Jackson also participated in the event.

- Noah Schaub paced the Falcons, placing in second, after a strong push to the finish line, ending with an impressive time of 18:46.4, only :01.3 ahead of the third place finisher.
- Freshman Cesar Arellano was the next BGSU runner to cross the finish line, coming in eighth with a time of 19:00.7.
- The next Falcon was Kyle Hibinger in 16th, who was able to record a time of 19:09.5 in his first collegiate race.
- Not far behind was Tyler Phillips who finished in 19th after having a time of 19:15.5.
- Gabe Garbarino was close behind, coming in 21st for the Falcons after recording a time of 19:20.6.
- The next BGSU runner to cross came at the 19:27.3 mark when Jonathan Wenning finished strong to come in 25th
- Jonathan Voth, Nathan Bostelman, Paul Garbarino, and Raymond Berling also competed for the Falcons.
