BGSU Cross Country Returns Home Friday For Mel Brodt
September 05, 2018 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After a strong performance at the Toledo Rockets Invitational, the men and women's cross country programs will return home for the 31st Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener. The event is named after Mel Brodt who served as the head coach for both the men and women's cross country teams for 25 years, along with 20 years as the track and field coach. During his tenure with the Falcons, Brodt coached and mentored 53 All-Americans, 92 MAC Champions and an Olympic champion (Dave Wottle, 1972, 800m).
Mel Brodt Invitational
BGSU will play host to the 31st Mel Brodt Invitational on Friday, Sept. 7 with the Toledo Rockets visiting. The men's race will begin at 5:00pm and be 5,000m, followed by the women's race at 5:35pm, also at 5,000m. Both events will be held at Forrest Creason Golf Course with parking located in Lot L by the Sebo Athletic Center. Â
Keep Your Eyes Open
BGSU Athletic Marketing will be giving away sunglasses to the first 100 fans at the event. In addition, fans can enter a raffle for a chance to win two tickets to Saturday's football game against Big Ten opponent, Maryland. Five winners will be selected between the men's and women's races.
Year-To-Year Momentum
Noah Schaub has had lots of success in this meet, finishing in first place last season, with a personal best of 15:30.1 in the event's 5k. Fellow seniors, Tyler Phillips and Jonathan Wenning, also recorded top five finishes last year, making for what should be a close competition among teammates. On the women's side, Jessi Lindstrom was the top placing BGSU athlete who is returning, crossing the line in 5th last year, with four more returning Falcons behind her.
Against The Rockets
Both Toledo and BGSU participated in the Toledo Rockets Invitational last weekend. For the men, the Falcons topped the Rockets in team scoring with a third place finish for Bowling Green and a sixth place finish for Toledo. However, in the women's team scoring, Toledo came out on top with a first place finish, with four of the top five runners. The BGSU women's program did not record a team score.
Building Blocks
Coming off of last week at the Toledo Rockets Invitational, both the men and women's teams are entering with momentum. The women's team was led by freshman Katerina Shuble, who ran unattached, as the group will hope to build on the overall success moving into this weekend. As for the men, Noah Schaub led the way in Toledo with a late surge to claim second place. The men's team emphasized running together, with many Falcons finishing near each other, which should translate into steady improvement across the board throughout the year. Moving forward, Coach Lou Snelling sees room for improvement with a steady foundation. "We will look to continue to build on fitness by achieving our team and individual goals we set for this week," said Snelling. "You can expect more athletes will be competing in a uniform and unattached on Friday."
