UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team returns home to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. Head coach Matt Fannon and the Falcons face DePaul University in Thursday (Sept. 13) action at Cochrane Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. and – as is the case with all home Falcon soccer regular-season action – admission is free.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will host Youngstown State University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 16) in a 1:00 p.m. start. It will be Senior Day at Cochrane, with the nine seniors in the program recognized in ceremonies prior to the match.
PROMOTIONS
• Thursday – International Student Night
• Sunday – Senior Day – BGSU Drumline
THANKS, SENIORS
• Sunday, as mentioned, is Senior Day for the BGSU women's soccer program. The Falcons' nine seniors are Morgan Abbitt, Elisa Baeron, Laura Bozzelli, Victoria Cope, Alexis Fricke, Erica Hubert, Jennifer Reyes, Marissa Swindell and Morgann Williams.
HOME COOKING
• The Falcons' double-overtime loss to Xavier on Thursday (Sept. 6) snapped a six-game home winning streak, just one shy of the school record. Despite that loss, BG has enjoyed great success at Cochrane Stadium since Matt Fannon assumed the helm.
• Last year, BGSU posted a 7-2-0 record at Cochrane, the team's best home ledger in nearly a decade (since the 2008 team went 8-1-1).
• BGSU's seven home wins last fall tied for the second-highest total in school history. The '08 team, obviously, holds the record, while the 2005 (7-2-2) and '06 (7-5-0) teams, like the 2017 club, won seven matches at home.
• The Falcons enter Thursday's DePaul match with a record of 8-3-0 at Cochrane during the Fannon Era. BG has outscored opponents, 24-11, in those 11 matches.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons are 1-3-1 on the young season after dropping matches against Xavier (0-1, 2-OT) and No. 15 Northwestern (0-2) last week. After playing a pair of overtime matches in Hawai'i to open the campaign, BGSU topped Oakland, 3-0, in the home opener. Then, the team's scheduled match at Valparaiso (Aug. 31) was halted late in the first half due to lightning and was ultimately cancelled.
• Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox leads the Falcons with four points on the young season, while senior Erica Hubert has three. Junior Kathleen Duwve has played every second in goal this season to date, and has 17 saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of just 0.92.
• A total of 24 players have seen action in at least one match this year, and 16 of those players have made at least one start.
• Head coach Matt Fannon and his staff – assistant coaches Cian McDonald, Dan Ball and Erin Kielmeyer – welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's team. BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, and the Falcons placed second in the MAC's East Division.
• The Falcons were the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference a year ago, with a four-game improvement over the 2016 season. BGSU's turnaround tied the team for 28th in the country in that department.
• BG' total of 13 victories a year ago was the second-highest in school history, while the Falcons' six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008.
• Fannon was voted the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year, and the Brown and Orange had four All-MAC Team selections. Two of those four returned, as Hubert was one of three Falcons to earn all-league first-team honors a season ago, while Alexis Fricke was named to the all-conference second team.
• Nikhita Jacob was named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team last November. Hubert, Fricke and Jacob are joined by returning starters Morgan Abbitt, Victoria Cope, Maureen Kennedy and Jennifer Reyes.
• Hubert led the team with 12 goals in 2017, as seven of the top-10 scorers returned from a '17 club that set the school single-season record for goals scored. Kennedy tied the BGSU single-season mark with 10 assists, while Cope and Duwve combined to start all 21 matches in goal in '17.
TWO IS A MAGIC NUMBER
• The Falcons began the home schedule with a 3-0 win over Oakland (Aug. 25). BGSU has now scored two or more goals in 14 of the 26 matches since Matt Fannon became head coach prior to the 2017 season.
• In the Fannon Era, BGSU is a perfect 14-0-0 when scoring at least two goals, and the Falcons are 0-10-2 when being held to fewer than two goals.
DUWVE CAN DO
• Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve earned her fifth career shutout in the win over Oakland. Duwve, who battled injuries and played in just three matches last season, already has shattered her 2017 totals in minutes played and saves.
• This fall, Duwve has 17 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.92. In her BGSU career, the Sylvania, Ohio native has 109 total stops and a GAA of 1.20 in over 1,800 minutes between the posts.
THE 2018 CAPTAINS
• Seniors Morgan Abbitt and Erica Hubert and redshirt junior Victoria Cope are the captains of the 2018 Falcons.
THE OPPONENTS
• DePaul is 4-2-1 on the season, and the Blue Demons' four wins include two against Big Ten Conference foes, Illinois and Minnesota. Last week, DU got a 1-0 win over Loyola (Ill.), then played Loyola Marymount to a scoreless draw. Morgan Turner has five goals and 11 points, while Franny Cerny has four goals and 10 points this fall. Mollie Eriksson has three shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.74. Coach Erin Chastain welcomed back 17 players, including six starters, from last year's club that finished 7-7-5 overall and 3-2-4 in the Big East Conference. DU was picked to place fifth in the league this year, while Cerny was named to the preseason all-conference team.
• Youngstown State is 1-5-2 heading into a Friday match vs. Milwaukee. The Penguins' win came against Canisius, and YSU has tied both Chicago State and St. Bonaventure. The Penguins are looking to snap a three-game losing streak that includes narrow setbacks to Purdue Fort Wayne (0-1) and Robert Morris (0-2) last week. Rasheda Abdul-Rahman and Samantha Mazula each have a goal on the year, while Kate McEachern has made five starts in goal and has a 1.84 GAA and a pair of shutouts. Brian Shrum is in his first season as coach of the Penguins, who were picked to finish ninth in the Horizon League in 2018. Last year, YSU went 4-13-1 overall.
THE SERIES
• Thursday's match marks the first-ever meeting between BGSU and DePaul in women's soccer.
• BGSU leads Youngstown State, 6-0-0, in the all-time series between the teams, including four wins at Cochrane Stadium and two victories on the road. The teams have not met since a narrow 2-1 BG win in Youngstown seven years ago (Sept. 11, 2011). The last meeting in Northwest Ohio was a 2-0 Falcon victory on Sept. 13, 2009.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the YSU contest, the Falcons will begin the Mid-American Conference portion of the 2018 schedule with a pair of road games. BG will face Miami in Oxford on Friday, Sept. 21, before heading to Muncie to meet Ball State two days later (Sept. 23).
• Then, the Falcons will close the month of September with a two-match homestand, as BG faces Northern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 28, and Western Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 30.
