Hubert scores late, Duwve makes career-high 13 saves
Senior Erica Hubert scored in the 78th minute and junior Kathleen Duwve made a career-high 13 saves, as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team battled DePaul University to a 1-1 draw Thursday evening (Sept. 13). The non-conference, double-overtime match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
The teams combined for 39 shot attempts, putting 19 on goal, but Duwve and DePaul goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson stood tall, with neither allowing a goal for over 77 minutes of play. Finally, the Falcons broke through.
Junior Chelsee Washington's through ball sent Hubert down the right side of the field and into the penalty area. Hubert cut toward goal and beat Eriksson with a low shot that struck the netting just inside the far post. The goal moved Hubert into sole possession of second place on the BGSU career list.
The Blue Demons equalized, however, with just 1:54 to go. Mary Tierney one-timed a cross from Jade Eriksen-Russo into the net to even the score.
Duwve, as mentioned, made 13 saves on the night. Eriksson had three stops, and the Blue Demons also were credited with a 'team save' on a header by Washington.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 13' | The early stages of the match featured a great deal of back-and-forth, end-to-end action, but not a lot of shot attempts. Junior Kathleen Duwve nicely broke up a chance for DePaul, grabbing a cross off the boot of Avery Hay.
• 18' | Senior Jennifer Reyes came up with a steal and got the ball ahead to redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox. Cox flicked the ball into the path of senior Erica Hubert, who hit a hard shot as she entered the 18-yard box, but the ball was deflected wide by a DePaul defender.
• 18' | The ensuing corner kick saw Hubert play a short ball to Reyes, who returned the ball to Hubert. The senior hit a shot from the right side of the box, but DU goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson made the save.
• 21' | DU's top-two scorers, Morgan Turner and Franny Cerny, entered the match with a combined nine goals on the season. Turner crossed the ball to Cerny in the box, and Cerny hit a dangerous shot, but Duwve was there for the point-blank save. Seconds later, the BG 'keeper grabbed a header off the noggin of Turner.
• 26' | After a BGSU foul just outside the box, Cerny took the ensuing free kick. Her blast hit the crossbar and bounced straight down, and the Falcons cleared the ball out of the area.
• 35' | A pair of Falcon freshmen teamed up, as Mackenzie Reuber hit a left-side cross into the box toward Sarah Allen. Allen's one-timer, however, was off line.
• 35' | Just over 30 seconds later, Hubert crossed a ball into the box, and Allen again was there. This time, the freshman hit a much harder shot, but the ball sailed high.
• 38' | Freshmen Linsey Spotts began the play for BG, and junior Kristin Tveit worked a combination play with Allen. Tveit took the return pass from Allen, and laid the ball into the path of onrushing junior Chelsee Washington at the top of the box. Washington's hard shot, however, went just over the crossbar.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 47' | Washington and Hubert just missed connecting on a through ball. Hubert was behind the DU defense, but a Blue Demon backliner got a toe on the ball to prevent the BG striker from breaking through.
• 51' | Duwve broke up a scoring chance for the visitors, after Cerny's cross found Turner in the box, and Duwve was fouled as she got to the ball.
• 58' | A Hubert corner kick found the head of Washington. The junior hit a hard downward strike, but the ball was blocked by a defender on the goal line for a 'team save.'
• 61' | Duwve made a diving save on Cerny after the DU sharpshooter cut the ball back and fired a hard shot.
• 62' | The Falcons slowly but surely moved the ball ahead. Cox was momentarily tied up by a defender after taking a pass from Hubert, but Cox ultimately won that battle just outside the box, and slid a pass to Washington. Washington slid the ball back to freshman Alexis Miller, who fired a shot that went just high.
• 69' | Sophomore Sophia Barnes split a pair of would-be defenders along the end line, but her cross was grabbed by Eriksson.
• 70' | Just that quickly, DePaul was on the move. Cerny found Jade Eriksen-Russo on the counterattack, but her shot sailed high.
• 74' | Hubert came up with a steal, and hit a quick pass to fellow senior Marissa Swindell. Swindell, in traffic at the top of the 18, looked to play a return pass to Hubert, but a defender was able to beat Hubert to the ball by a split-second.
• 78' | GOAL | With 12:14 to go in the half, the Falcons broke on top. Washington played Hubert down the right side, and Hubert raced past a defender, angled toward the goal and hit a low shot that beat Eriksson and nestled just inside the far post.
• 88' | Duwve went high into the air to grab a diagonal ball from Turner.
• 89' | GOAL | DePaul tied the score with just 1:54 to go in regulation. Eriksen-Russo's left-side cross was met in stride by Mary Tierney. Duwve had no chance as Tierney redirected the ball into the right side of the net.
• 88' | The Blue Demons had one more shot attempt in regulation, but Duwve easily saved the effort by Sydney Parker.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 94' | The Blue Demons had the only three shot attempts of the first overtime period, but all three were on goal. Duwve made the first of two saves against Cerny in the period, making a leaping save of the DU senior's shot after a BG giveaway. Duwve would also make a stop on Turner before the period ended.
• 105' | While DU had all three shot attempts in the first OT period, the Falcons had a 4-0 advantage in the second extra sesson. In a near carbon copy of the BG goal, Washington –after taking a pass from Miller – put Hubert into the box on the right side. This time, however, Hubert's shot was blocked away at the last second by a lunging DU defender.
• 106' | Barnes received a forward pass from Washington and played a left-side cross into the box. Cox hit a quick shot, but the DU 'keeper was able to make the stop.
• 108' | Senior Alexis Fricke made a nifty play to stand up Turner in the box before she could get a shot off.
• 109' | As the clock ticked down toward one minute remaining, a Hubert shot from distance was blocked, but it was blocked by the arm/hand of a DU player, and a foul was called.
• 110' | Washington took the ensuing free kick, and fired a laser, but the shot whizzed just over the bar.
