Falcons Land a School-Record Six on All-MAC Team

Mwembia, Robin named to all-league first team
A school-record six Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have been named to the 2019 All-Mid-American Conference Team. Senior Anthony Mwembia and junior Achille Robin have been named to the All-MAC First Team, while seniors Chris Brennan and Charlie Maciejewski and juniors Zach Buescher and Chris Sullivan all earned second-team honors.
The all-conference team, along with the specialty award winners, was announced on Thursday (Nov. 14) by the league office.
Mwembia has been named to the All-MAC First Team for the second time in his BGSU career. He earned similar honors as a freshman in 2016. Brennan earns second-team accolades for the second time in three seasons, after being selected to the all-conference squad as a sophomore in 2017.
Buescher, Maciejewski, Robin and Sullivan each earn all-league honors for the first time in their respective BGSU careers.
The Falcons' total of six All-MAC selections, as mentioned, is the highest in school history. BGSU has had five All-MAC Team members on five occasions, in 1993 (the first season the MAC sponsored men's soccer), '94, '96, 2014 and 2016. It should be noted that schools were allowed to nominate only five players for the All-MAC voting during the first few seasons of MAC men's soccer.
Mwembia, a native of Toulouse, France, has started all 19 matches for the Falcons this season, and has 57 saves, 10 shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.86. Mwembia has allowed just two goals over the last six matches, and was named a MAC co-Player of the Week on Tuesday. A team captain, he is the first BGSU goalkeeper to post a double-digit shutout total since Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow in 1998. With 29 career shutouts, Mwembia trails only Vallow on that school list. Mwembia had eight saves on Tuesday night vs. Northern Illinois, and has moved into seventh place in school history with 242 career stops.
Robin, a native of Les Sables d'Olonne, France, has been a key contributor at both ends of the pitch this season. From his center-back position, he has helped the Falcons keep those 10 clean sheets, and at the offensive end of the field, Robin, the lone Falcon to play every second of every match in 2019, ranks second on the team in both goals and points. Robin has five goals and 14 points this year to date, and he is tied for third on the Falcons with four assists. His last two goals, on back-to-back Tuesdays, have been game-winning tallies, including a 'Golden Goal' vs. NIU when he converted a 95th-minute penalty kick. Robin has been named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week twice this year, and was voted the MAC Player of the Week back on Sept. 10.
Brennan, who hails from Copley, Ohio, earned all-league honors despite missing six matches due to injury. He played in BGSU's first 11 matches of the season, and was leading the team in scoring when he was injured in early October. Brennan still ranks third on the club in points, with 12, and he is also third on the team with four goals. He is tied with Robin for third on the team in assists, with four. Brennan, a team captain, scored at least one point in six-straight matches and in seven of the first nine contests of the season, and had a pair of GWG at Cochrane Stadium in September. Brennan now has career totals of 41 points on 15 goals and 11 assists.
Buescher, a native of Holland, Ohio, has started all 19 matches, and has been on the bench for a total of just 60 minutes this season. A steadying force for the Falcons in the middle of the field, Buescher has one assist on the season. He has played all but 30 minutes of the team's six MAC matches (both regular-season and tournament) to date. Buescher has started every match since arriving on campus, making 53 starts to date, and he has seven career points on a goal and five assists.
Maciejewski, a Cincinnati native, has played in 18 matches, starting them all, and is fifth on the Falcons in scoring. He has seven points on a goal and five assists, and he ranks second on the team in the latter category. Maciejewski, a team captain along with Brennan and Mwembia, has had a knack for contributing to the BG offense at key times this season. His lone goal of the year was a game-winner, and four of his five assists this fall have come on the GWG, including in both of BGSU's regular-season MAC wins, vs. West Virginia and NIU. Maciejewski, who scored a pair of 'Golden Goals' last fall, now has 15 career points on four goals and seven assists.
Sullivan, from Naperville, Ill., leads the team in goals, assists and points. He has 21 points on six goals and nine helpers this season to date. Sullivan, who has tripled his point total for all of last season, was directly involved in nine goals in a 12-goal BG span through the end of September and the entirety of October. Sullivan ended October with six points in a two-game stretch, including back-to-back two-assist games. He was named to the CSN National Team of the Week for his play in the final week of October. Sullivan has started all 19 matches this season and 45 in his career, and he now has 33 career points on 10 goals and 13 assists.
The Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols are 12-6-1 on the season, and BGSU finished MAC play with a 2-3-0 league ledger. BG defeated Northern Illinois twice in a four-day span, including 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday night (Nov. 12) at Cochrane Stadium. Tuesday's victory came in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
BGSU, the tournament's number-four seed, now heads to Northeast Ohio to meet top-seeded Akron in Friday's (Nov. 15) semifinal round. The Falcons and Zips will meet in a 6:00 p.m. start at UA's FirstEnergy Stadium.
