Falcons end season with 13-7-1 record
Luke McCormick's goal with 4:48 remaining in the second half lifted West Virginia University to a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Nov. 17), in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship match at FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
With the win, the Mountaineers earn the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. WVU, the number-six seed, improves to 9-8-2 on the season and will face an opponent to be determined in the first round of the national tourney.
The Falcons, the number-four seed for the MAC Tournament, drop to 13-7-1 on the year.
The lone goal of the match came after a short WVU cross from the right side. Josh DiMatteo headed the ball toward goal, but it was blocked by a BGSU defender. The ball, however, caromed up in the air and spun toward the left side of the goalmouth, where McCormick headed it home.
The Falcons outshot the Mountaineers, 10-6 on the day, and BG had five shots on goal to WVU's three. But, a pair of 'team saves' and a friendly bounce helped the Mountaineers keep a clean sheet on a sunny Sunday in Northeast Ohio.
Senior Anthony Mwembia made a pair of saves in goal for the Brown and Orange, and broke up numerous other scoring opportunities.
Steven Tekesky had three stops for WVU, and he was aided by his defense, as the Mountaineers were credited with a pair of 'team saves' as well.
BGSU had a 7-3 lead in second-half shots, including one effort by senior Charlie Maciejewski that hit the post and shots by sophomore Matt Walters and junior Chris Sullivan that were stopped by WVU for the aforementioned 'team saves' by the Mountaineers.
Mwembia, Sullivan and junior Achille Robin all were named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 1' | Almost immediately, the Mountaineers had a scoring chance. A left-side cross was redirected on frame by Josh DiMatteo, who had scored a pair of goals in WVU's semifinal-round win. Senior Anthony Mwembia was up to the challenge, however, making a diving save. DiMatteo's effort would prove to be the only shot on goal of the entire first half.
• 4' | Junior Vinny Worner won a corner kick for the Falcons, and classmate Chris Sullivan played a cross toward the box after taking that corner and receiving the ball once again. But, that ball was blocked out for another BGSU corner, and the Mountaineers cleared the latter kick away.
• 18' | Sophomore Matt Walters won the ball at midfield and slid a pass to Sullivan. Sullivan made a run downfield, but his attempted return pass toward Walters was knocked away at the top of the 18-yard box.
• 19' | The aforementioned ball was knocked out of bounds, and junior Achille Robin got his head on the ensuing BG throw-in as the ball sailed into the box. But, that shot was off the mark.
• 23' | Mwembia alertly snuffed out a scoring chance before it could materialize, diving on a free kick as it rolled into the box.
• 26' | WVU's Pau Jimenez Albelda received a cross from the right side and looked to hit a shot from the top of the box, but he misfired on the kick, which was blocked away by a BG backliner.
• 32' | BG won a free kick on the left side and Sullivan put that kick into the mixer. Senior Charlie Maciejewski got his head on the ball to keep it alive, but as it pinballed around the box, a foul was called on the Falcons.
• 32' | WVU quickly countered, and as a BGSU defender attempted to clear the ball, it caromed off of his leg and toward – but over – the net for a corner kick. Off of that corner, however, freshman Michael Montemurri headed the ball out of the area despite being fouled by the Mountaineers, and a BG free kick was awarded.
•35' | Soon after checking into the match for the first time, freshman Spencer Straka's cross/shot from the left side was grabbed by WVU goalkeeper Steven Tekesky.
• 38' | Robin played a long ball ahead to Straka, who got past his would-be defender and headed toward the box with a head of steam. Tekesky came charging off of his line, but Straka cut to his left, poking the ball past the WVU 'keeper and toward the center of the penalty area. A defender, however, was able to arrive and disrupt the play before Straka could get a shot off.
• 39' | Straka, who had an impact on the match from the very second he checked in, slid a ball ahead to Maciejewski on the left side of the area. From the left corner of the six-yard box, Maciejewski hit a shot, but it was blocked out of play, and the ensuing corner kick was cleared away.
• 42'  | For the second time in the opening half, a long throw by Walters found the head of Robin, but again, the shot was off line.
• 43' | Walters put the ball ahead to Maciejewski on the right side of the box. The senior, with very little space near the end line, somehow got around his man and hit a low cross. But, Tekesky snared it at the near post.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 49 ' | Sophomore Jensen Lukacsko played a diagonal ball into the box, but as Sullivan was winding up to volley it out of the air, a defender poked it away.
• 51' | Maciejewski won a corner on the right side, and Sullivan slid that corner back to Lukacsko, who in turn found Maciejewski on the right side. The senior's short cross was deflected out of play.
• 53' | TEAM SAVE | Maciejewski put the ball ahead to sophomore Kale Nichols, and he crossed it in to Walters. Walters unleashed a scorching shot from the center of the 18-yard box, but the shot was blocked by the chest of an unsuspecting WVU defender.
• 54' | BG won the ball right back, and Sullivan made a long run downfield. The junior cut to his right as he neared the 18-yard line, and he hit a hard right-footed shot between a pair of defenders. But, Tekesky was able to make the stop.
• 62' | Maciejewski displayed several nifty moves near midfield, maintaining possession despite the presence of several Mountaineers. The senior worked the ball to Sullivan, who passed it ahead to Worner. Worner took it into the penalty area, and attempted a cross, but it was blocked before it could reach a teammate in the center of the field.
• 63' | Mwembia made a save on a low shot by Pascal Derwaritsch from the top of the 18.
• 67' | Robin intercepted a ball at midfield and made a run toward the box. But, he and Straka were unable to make a connection as the junior tried to play the ball out wide.
• 68' | POST | Off of a Walters throw into the box, a defender headed the ball near the six-yard line. It headed toward Maciejewski, who one-timed it out of the air. The senior's spinning shot, hit from approximately 16 yards out on the right side of the box, rang off of the far post and bounced away. Nichols reached the rebound first, but his half volley went over the bar.
• 72' | Maciejewski seemed to be trapped on the right side of the penalty area, but befuddled yet another WVU player with several stellar moves. The senior nutmegged that defender and poked the ball toward net, where it was blocked out of play for a corner.
• 72' | Off of that Sullivan corner, Montemurri put a header on frame, and only a diving stop by Tekesky kept the ball from going into the left side of the net. Tekesky pushed the ball wide of the post, but Robin saved the ball along the end line and played it back to sophomore Colin McCort. McCort put a diagonal ball back into the danger zone, but Tekesky was able to grab the ball in traffic.
• 78' | McCort was unceremoniously knocked to the ground in the center of the park, approximately 40 yards from goal. Sullivan's free kick found the head of Robin near the top of the penalty area, but the Mountaineers were able to successfully deal with the ensuing flick-on.
• 79' | WVU looked to counter, but Robin got between a WVU striker and the rolling ball, escorting the ball over the end line for a BG goal kick.
• 83' | TEAM SAVE | A long free kick by senior Tom Wrobel was nodded backward by Robin into the box. The onrushing Sullivan got a toe on the ball to poke it past the flailing Tekesky, but as the ball floated toward goal, it was cleared away by a Mountaineer defender.
• 84' | After a foul on the Falcons, a curving free kick was grabbed by Mwembia in the box.
• 86' | GOAL | The Mountaineers got on the board with just 4:48 to go. A crossing ball from the right side was headed toward goal by DiMatteo. Wrobel blocked that shot, but the ball caromed up into the air and continued to spin toward the goal line. As Mwembia, who had hit the ground in a diving effort to block the initial shot, scrambled to his feet, Luke McCormick was able to head the rebound into the net from close range.
• 86' | As the clock ticked down toward the four-minute mark, Nichols headed the ball into the box. It was met there by the knee of a WVU player, and Sullivan picked it up just outside the area. The junior took a touch to his right and hit a hard shot that forced Tekesky to make a diving stop near the right post.
• 88' | Maciejewski won another corner, and Sullivan's ball was headed back across the six-yard line by Nichols. The sophomore's header found Robin, who quickly put it on frame with another header, but the WVU 'keeper happened to be in the right place at the right time and snagged the shot out of the air with roughly two minutes to go.
• 90' | Lukacsko played the ball ahead, where Robin headed it toward goal, but Tekesky was able to grab it before Straka could reach it.
FINAL STATISTICS
• The Falcons, as mentioned, had advantages of 10-6 in shot attempts and 5-3 in shots on goal. Achille Robin led all players with three shots in the match, while Charlie Maciejewski and Chris Sullivan had two apiece. Sullivan put both of his efforts on frame.
• Josh DiMatteo was the lone Mountaineer with two shot attempts in the match. DiMatteo, who scored his first two goals of the season in WVU's semifinal-round match vs. Western Michigan, picked up his first assist of the year in Sunday's final.
• Luke McCormick scored the lone goal, in the 86th minute. For McCormick, a freshman, the goal was his second of the season.
• Senior Anthony Mwembia made two saves in the match. Steven Tekesky made 60 percent of his team's saves, stopping three of BGSU's five shots on frame and getting significant help from his defenders in both the 53rd and 83rd minute.
• BGSU had seven corner kicks to WVU's four. Those totals included a 4-0 second-half advantage for the Orange and Brown.
WHAT'S NEXT?
• The Mountaineers, as mentioned, earn the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The national tournament field will be announced on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
• The Falcons drop to 13-7-1 on the year. BGSU posted a double-digit win total for the first time since 2014 and just the second time since 1998.
• The Falcons have more than doubled the team's win total from a year ago. The 2018 club went 6-7-4.
