Falcons use 20-2 first-quarter run to surge past (the other) Falcons
The Bowling Green University women's basketball team used a first-quarter run to take control on Monday night (Nov. 18), and the Falcons went on to an 88-54 win over Notre Dame College at the Stroh Center. BGSU is now 3-0 on the young season.
The (BGSU) Falcons got key contributions from multiple players in the win over the (NDC) Falcons. Junior Angela Perry scored a game-high 20 points, going 9-for-13 from the field, and she had nine rebounds in the win. Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson hit seven of her nine field-goal attempts en route to 18 points on the night.
Freshman Kaillie Hall had her second-straight double-digit game with 12 points, while both sophomore Kadie Hempfling and freshman Elissa Brett flirted with double-doubles. Hempfling and Brett each had eight points, and Brett added 10 rebounds in the victory.
Hempfling was actually one basket away from a triple-double, with 11 rebounds and 10 assists in addition to those eight points. And, freshman Olivia Trice came off the bench to score seven points in just eight minutes. BGSU had a 59-26 advantage on the boards, with 17 offensive rebounds on the night.
The visitors got 11 points from Theresa Parr, while Kyleigh Ramlow -- a Toledo native -- had nine points.
BG trailed, 5-2, early on, before going on a 20-2 run to take a double-digit lead for good. The visitors got a bucket in the final minute of the first quarter to get within 13 points, but BGSU then scored the first 10 points of the second period to take a 32-9 lead, and the game never was closer than 21 points thereafter.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Several weeks ago, sophomore Kadie Hempfling became the first Falcon to post a double-digit assist total in the Stroh Center. Now, she has had 10 assists twice in a three-game span.
• Hempfling had a career-high 10 assists in the season opener vs. Cleveland State (Nov. 6). That was the first time in building history that a BG player had dished out as many as 10 assists (the Stroh Center is in its ninth season, having been opened prior to the 2011-12 academic year). The Ottawa, Ohio, native repeated that feat on Monday, with 10 more assists vs. NDC.
• Hempfling has 22 assists in three games this season, and 143 helpers in 33 career games at BG.
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• BGSU entered the game ranked third in the nation in three-point field-goal percentage, having hit nearly 50 percent of the long-distance attempts in the first two wins of the season.
• On Monday, BG went 6-for-19 from the arc, for a 31.6% success rate. But, BGSU had great success inside, scoring 50 points in the paint in the victory
FIRST QUARTER
• After both teams were unsuccessful on two offensive possessions to begin the game, the visitors got on the board first, as Seina Adachi hit a shot in the paint with a minute gone. An offensive rebound by junior Mari Hill led to a layup from classmate Madisen Parker, but NDC took a 5-2 lead when Kyleigh Ramlow – a native of Toledo and a graduate of Swanton H.S. – hit a three-pointer at the 8:12 mark.
• Then, however, the home team went on a 20-2 run to take a double-digit lead for the rest of the evening. Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson began that stretch with her own personal 7-0 run, hitting a left-side jumper, then a driving right-side banker. When sophomore Kadie Hempfling found Thompson for a corner three, BGSU's lead was 9-5 at the game's initial media timeout.
• Junior Angela Perry split a pair of free throws, and after Theresa Parr stopped BG's 8-0 run with a bucket, Perry slipped her defender and took a Thompson pass for a layup and a 12-7 lead.
• Freshman Kaillie Hall hit adriving layup, and Perry scored on a putback, then a turnaround banker. Then, Hall immediately stole the inbounds pass and laid the ball off glass and in.
• A pair of Hall free throws gave BG 12-straight points as part of the larger 20-2 run, before Jada Marone scored in the final minute of the period to cut BG's lead to 22-9.
SECOND QUARTER
• BG scored 10-straight points to begin the second quarter, holding the visitors off the scoreboard for nearly half of the period.
• Senior Jane Uecker grabbed a defensive rebound after BG forced a miss, and Hill quickly fired the ball ahead to Thompson for a layup.
• Then, Thompson's nice look resulted in a Perry layup, and freshman Elissa Brett threw the ball inside to Hempfling for another layup and a 28-9 lead.
• Thompson picked up another assist, firing the ball to Hempfling for a reverse layup. Then, after a miss by NDC, Hempfling tapped the ball to herself, grabbed it for a defensive rebound, ran the floor and found Hall for a transition layup and a 32-9 lead.
• After the visitors snapped that run with a free throw, Hall's pass resulted in a Perry layup, and sophomore Morgan McMillen knocked down a driving, and-one layup. Her free throw was good, and McMillen then fed freshman Olivia Trice for a fast-break layup and a 39-10 lead.
• Notre Dame went on an 8-0 run, with four different players scoring during that stretch. But, McMillen took a Hempfling pass and knocked down a three-point try from the left wing, and Hempfling then pounded it inside to Perry for a layup in the final seconds of the half, giving BG a 44-18 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• NDC scored the first found points of the half, before Hill laid the ball off for Thompson for a layup. The teams traded points for the first few minutes of the half, and a Ramlow three-pointer made it a 49-27 game.
• Hempfling threw it inside to Perry for a bucket, then knocked down a corner three to give BG a 54-27 lead. Hempfling picked up two more assists, on another Perry layup and a Thompson triple, as she was involved in the scoring of every point in that BGSU 10-0 run.
• The visitors chipped away at that lead, scoring 11 of the next 13 points. Back-to-back three-pointers by Parr and Marone cut BG's lead to 61-38, and Emma Martcheva's layup made it a 21-point game wit just over two minutes left in the period.
• But, Hempfling drove and kicked the ball to Hall for a long two-pointer in the final minute of the quarter, giving the Orange and Brown a 64-40 lead after 30 minutes.
• Hempfling had three points and four assists in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling's helpfulness extended into the final period as well, as she handed the ball off to Thompson for a layup on the opening possession of the period.
• The visitors scored the next five points, including a three-point play by Seina Adachi, but Hill lobbed the ball inside to Perry for a layup, and several minutes later, Brett's nifty pass found an open Uecker underneath the bucket. The senior's layup gave BG a 72-47 lead.
• That layup began a 7-0 run, which also included two Uecker free throws and was capped by a Hall layup. That bucket came when the freshman ran the floor after a Brett defensive rebound. BG led, 77-47, midway through the quarter.
• Brett knocked down a nice layup, then connected on a driving shot with the shot clock winding down to give BG an 81-49 lead.
• Senior Clare Glowniak kicked the ball out to Trice for a three-pointer, and Trice knocked down a last-minute shot to cap the scoring.
FINAL STATISTICS
• BGSU shot 52.3% on the night, going 34-for-65 from the floor. The home team had a whopping 59-26 advantage on the glass.
• Notre Dame shot 29.4%, hitting 20 field goals in 68 attempts.
• Both teams made six three-pointers, but NDC took 30 long-range shots (20%) while BGSU attempted 19 (31.6%).
• BGSU had 23 assists on 34 buckets, and the hosts had advantages of 50-26 in points in the paint, 14-0 in second-chance points and 53-28 in bench scoring.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons play eight consecutive games on the road, beginning with Sunday's (Nov. 24) matchup at Valparaiso. That game will tip off at 1:00 p.m. locally (2:00 p.m. ET).
• Then, BGSU will play three games in as many days at the Victoria Invitational in British Columbia. The Falcons will begin that tourney with a game vs. Green Bay on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28).
• The Falcons' next home game is on Monday, Dec. 30, against Davis & Elkins.
