Falcons Fall in OT at Valpo for First Loss of Season
November 24, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Crusaders' comeback leads to 95-90 decision
Madisen Parker's career scoring day and Caterrion Thompson's first collegiate double-double were not enough on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 24), as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team lost for the first time this season. The Falcons fell, 95-90 in overtime, to Valparaiso University at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Parker, a junior, scored a game- and career-high 28 points vs. the Crusaders, while Thompson, a fourth-year Falcon, had 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds on Sunday.
Thompson also had a team-leading five assists vs. the Crusaders, while sophomore Kadie Hempfling had 11 points and junior Angela Perry 10. Perry was 3-for-3 from the field and added seven rebounds.
Freshman Elissa Brett had nine boards as the Falcons held a 45-38 lead on the glass. BGSU had 17 offensive rebounds on the afternoon.
For the Crusaders (2-3), Shay Frederick and Grace Hales each had 21 points, while Carie Weinman added 18. Frederick scored seven points in overtime, including five at the free-throw line.
The hosts hit 10 three-pointers, including nine after halftime, and VU was 27-for-32 at the free-throw line on the day.
Parker hit seven three-pointers as BG went 11-for-26 from long range. The Falcons struggled at the stripe, however, going 21-of-35.
FIRST QUARTER
• The lead changed hands several times in the early going. Addison Stoller hit a three to get the hosts on the board, but Kadie Hempfling's corner three tied the score, and Jane Uecker went around her defender for a layup that knotted the contest at 5-5.
• Then, Hempfling stole the ball and whipped it ahead to Mari Hill for a transition layup and a 7-5 advantage. But, Hempfling and Hill were each called for their second foul of the day seven seconds apart. Hill's foul was BG's fifth of the afternoon, sending the hosts to the free-throw line with just 3:40 gone.
• Two tosses were followed by Caitlin Morrison's driving layup, but Caterrion Thompson knocked down a pair of free throws, and moments later, Madisen Parker took a Thompson pass and knocked down a three-point try from the left wing.
• Parker's triple gave BG a 12-11 lead, and it also began an 11-0 run for the visitors. The next three points in that run came at the line, before Kaillie Hall found Morgan McMillen for a triple, prompting a timeout by the hosts at the 1:32 mark.
• BG got stop out of the timeout, however, and Angela Perry put back a teammate's miss for a 20-11 Falcon lead. Finally, the hosts snapped the run as Grace Hales hit a runner, but McMillen took a Parker pass and knocked down another triple try for a 23-13 lead. A pair of VU free throws ended the first-period scoring.
SECOND QUARTER
• Parker drilled another three-ball, but Valpo proceeded to go on an 8-0 run to cut BG's lead to just three points. But, Parker took Hall's cross-court pass and connected from long range once again, giving the Brown and Orange a 29-23 lead.
• Thompson hit a pull-up jumper, and Hill drove and drew Shay Frederick's third foul of the day, hitting a free throw for a 32-25 lead.
• Two Perry free throws gave BG a nine-point advantage, and yet another Parker triple made it a 37-27 game. Then, with BG running, Parker faked a three-point try, got her defender in the air, took a dribble and knocked downed a two-pointer. Elissa Brett's free throw gave BG a 40-27 lead before VU's Carie Weinman banked home a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Falcons' lead to 10 points at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• The hosts scored four quick points, all at the line, before Parker drained another three-ball. Hempfling's driving layup prompted a VU timeout, and after Weinman hit a layup, Hempfling fed Perry for an 'and-one' layup. The free throw gave BG a 48-40 lead at the 5:38 mark.
• Back came the hosts, as Weinman hit a corner three to cut BG's lead to four. But, Thompson hit a nifty pull-up floater off of a drive and spin move, and Perry's putback gave BG a 53-45 lead.
• But, for the second time in the game, Valparaiso saw a three-point attempt carom off of the glass and through the hoop. This time, the beneficiary was Marlee Profitt, and her lone field goal of the game cut BG's lead to five at 53-48.
• Moments later, Cara Van Kempen sandwiched three-pointers around a Hempfling layup, with the second triple cutting BG's lead to just three points.
• Hempfling, however, hit a pair of free throws, then found Hall for a layup in transition. When Brett grabbed a teammate's miss and put it back up and in to beat the buzzer, the Falcons had a 63-55 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling scored on a layup in the opening seconds, and Hall stole the ball, was fouled and knocked down two shots from the stripe. Then, Thompson got her own miss and put it back up and in for a 69-57 lead.
• But, Weinman's catch-and-shoot three began a run for the hosts.
• After several fouls and one ejection early in the period, two free throws and the ball were awarded to the hosts. Frederick made both shoes, and a Stoller putback cut BG's lead to five.
• BG got to the line, but missed free throws, on back-to-back possessions, and Stoller scored inside once again, knocking BG's lead down to three points, at 69-66.
• The teams traded unsuccessful possessions before Thompson's driving Euro-step layup gave BG a five-point lead with 4:30 to go.
• Back-to-back fouls were called on the Falcons on the next possession, but Weinman missed a pair of free-throw attempts. Then, Parker took a Thompson pass and drilled a three-pointer for a 74-66 lead with 3:50 to go. The hosts turned the ball over, but a BG turnover led to a run-out for the hosts.
• Grace White missed that shot, but Hales put the ball back up and in while drawing a foul. Her free throw made it a five-point game at the 3:11 mark, and a Van Kempen triple cut BG's lead to just two points.Â
• A free throw with 1:58 to go cut the lead to a single point, before Parker knocked down a tough shot from the foul-line extended with 1:37 to go.
• Frederick took a pass inside and hit a layup, but McMillen drained a corner three with 45 seconds remaining for a 79-75 BG lead.
• Frederick hit a layup with 36.6 seconds to go, and Hill split a pair of free throws at the other end.
• On the next possession, Frederick's three-point try was well off the mark. The shot did not draw iron, thwacking off of the square and bouncing away. But, White grabbed the rebound, putting it back up and in while drawing a foul. Her free throw tied the game with 20.1 seconds left.
• BG had one more chance, but McMillen's runner in traffic would not drop, and the teams headed to overtime.
OVERTIME
• In the extra period, each team had an unsuccessful trip down the floor before Ella Ellenson knocked down a three-pointer at the 3:35 mark to give the hosts the lead for the first time since midway through the opening quarter. The shot was Ellenson's lone field goal of the game.
• BG missed a pair of free throws, and White's driving layup gave VU an 85-80 lead with just over three minutes on the clock.
• A Falcon three-point try did not drop, but an open layup attempt by White was unsuccessful. Neither team would score until Parker grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 1:43 to go. She split her free throws, but after the second one did not go, Thompson stole the ball off of the ensuing rebound and was fouled. She made two shots from the stripe to cut the VU lead to 85-83 with 1:40 left.
• But, Frederick was fouled at the other end and hit two shots. A BG shot was off the mark, and the Crusaders used all of the shot clock before Hales hit an 'and-one' shot with just 39.8 seconds to go. Her charity toss gave the hosts a 90-83 lead, and BG would not get closer than four points the rest of the way.
• Parker would score five more points, including her seventh three-pointer of the afternoon, and Thompson knocked down another shot as well. But, Frederick had a layup off of a long inbounds pass and also hit three of her four free-throw tries in the final 15 seconds to seal the win for the hosts.
FINAL STATISTICS
• Valpo shot 43.9 percent to BG's 43.3% for the game, as the Crusaders went 29-of-66 from the floor while the Falcons were 29-for-67.
• BG was 11-of-26 (42.3%) from three-point range, while VU was 10-for-33 (30.3%). The home team went 27-for-32 at the free-throw line (84.4%), while the visitors shot just 60%, going 21-of-35.
• BGSU had a 45-38 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards. The Falcons had a 19-11 lead in second-chance points, a 12-7 margin in fast-break points and a 29-24 edge in bench scoring.
