ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner scored on a floating jumper with 3.8 seconds left to lift the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team to a 77-75 victory over Western Kentucky University on Friday (Nov. 22) night. The contest was played on the island of St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands) in the opening round of the 2019 Paradise Jam.
A strong crowd of 1,924 packed the UVI Sports and Fitness Center for the 20th-annual Paradise Jam. Bowling Green moves to 4-1 on the season with the victory. With the loss, Western Kentucky drops to 4-1.
The first half featured a series of large runs. Bowling Green went on a 14-0 run to take a 26-12 lead, but WKU answered almost immediately, going on an 18-0 run to take a 32-27 advantage. It all added up to a 40-39 lead at the break for Western Kentucky.
Both teams traded mini runs through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but then Western Kentucky seemed to take control of the contest. The Hilltoppers led by seven points with 6:44 left in regulation, and even maintained a three-point lead with just 13 seconds remaining.
A potential game-tying triple for BGSU was followed up with a tough tip-in from sophomore guard Caleb Fields. The basket, with 12 seconds remaining, pulled the Falcons within a single point. WKU's Josh Anderson was fouled with eight seconds to play, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one. Turner grabbed the rebound, glided down the floor, and drilled a patented floater with 3.8 seconds to go to give the Falcons a 76-75 lead.
Western Kentucky rushed down the court and traveled with 0.6 seconds left on the clock. The Hilltoppers fouled senior forward Marlon Sierra. Sierra made the first and missed the second. WKU's full-court heave at the buzzer fell significantly short of the rim.
Turner led the Falcons with 27 points, six rebounds and six assists. Senior guard Dylan Frye scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half. Frye went 5-for-7 from downtown.
Western Kentucky – picked to win Conference-USA – was led by expected lottery pick Charles Bassey. The center finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
"It was a lot of fun. This was a fun game. It had flows. It had peaks. It had valleys – it had everything in it. It was a lot of fun to be a part of, and the guys stuck together no matter what happened. They [Western Kentucky] went on a nice run in the first half – 18-0 – and then they went on another run in the second half. We were able to stick together and continue to fight. That's what it's all about." – Head Coach Michael Huger
