Dons Down Falcons, 64-56, on Friday
November 29, 2019 | Women's Basketball
BGSU will face California Baptist to wrap up tourney play in Victoria
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling and junior Madisen Parker combined for 30 points and 16 rebounds on Friday (Nov. 29), but it was not enough as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team fell, 64-56, to the University of San Francisco. The game, part of second-day action at the Greater Victoria Invitational, was held at CARSA Performance Gym.
Hempfling had a team-leading 16 points for the Falcons (3-3), while Parker scored 14 on the day. Both players had eight rebounds vs. the Dons (3-4). But, USF's Makayla Williams had game-high totals of 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Williams also had five blocked shots, tying for game honors. Junior Angela Perry had a career-high five blocks for the Falcons, just two shy of matching the school record.
Hempfling's point total was a season high, and was three points shy of her career best.
Ioanna Krimili scored 17 points and Dolapo Balogun 14 for the Dons, who held a 44-38 advantage on the boards. USF had 17 offensive rebounds, with Williams (seven) and Lucie Hoskova (five) combining for 12 boards at the offensive end.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I think the most disappointing thing about today's game is that we feel like the toughness piece ended up being the difference. We gave up a lot of second shots, and our toughness with the ball needs to be a lot better. Those are things that, moving forward, we know we need to improve."
FIRST QUARTER
• Junior Mari Hill drove the right baseline and kicked the ball out to classmate Madisen Parker for a left-corner three-pointer with just under two minutes gone, giving the Brown and Orange a 3-2 lead.
• The lead changed hands several times in the opening quarter, as sophomore Kadie Hempfling took Parker's entry pass and hit a nifty layup for a 5-4 lead. But, Abby Rathbun's corner three gave the Dons the lead once again.
• Parker received Hill's 'extra pass' and drained her second three-pointer of the day, giving BG an 8-7 advantage at the first media timeout.
• After freshman Elissa Brett found senior Jane Uecker for a left-side jumper, the contest was knotted, 10-10, but the Dons responded with a transition layup from Kia Vaalavirta.
• Freshman Kaillie Hall kicked the ball out to fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson for a triple that tied the game at 13-all, before USF hit a late bucket to take a two-point advantage after 10 minutes.Â
SECOND QUARTER
• Parker's third three-pointer of the day gave the Falcons the lead once again, but back-to-back layups by Williams put the Dons up by three.
• Hempfling hit a layup after a nice hesitation move, but USF scored the next four points to take a five-point lead at the media break.
• Thompson hit a right-wing three-ball after a nifty crossover move, but Ioanna Krimil's step-back three gave USF a six-point lead once again, at 27-21.
• Brett hit a long two-pointer, and junior Angela Perry was fouled and hit both shots at the stripe.
• With one second on the shot clock and 3.4 seconds left in the half, Brett was fouled on a drive to the bucket. The freshman knocked down a pair of free throws to cut BG's deficit to four points, 31-27, at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Hempfling hit a pair of charity tosses in the first minute of the period, and the sophomore converted a nice driving layup at the 8:22 mark, but Dolapo Balogun made a three-pointer, then hit a layup in transition to give the Dons a 40-31 lead.
• Sophomore Morgan McMillen found Parker for a second-chance three-pointer, but Krimili hit a jumper from the foul line extended, then made a layup to give her team a 10-point lead. Then, a Vaalavirta three-pointer gave the Dons a 47-34 lead, the largest of the game, midway through the quarter.
• Hempfling, however, converted a three-point play out of the media timeout, and scored inside in transition, cutting the deficit to eight and forcing USF to burn a timeout.
• Brett split a pair of free throws at the 2:23 mark, and Perry was fouled as Hill attempted to lob the ball inside to her. Perry made both shots at the stripe, giving BG an 8-1 run and cutting the margin to six points, but Williams scored on a putback in the last 10 seconds of the period for a 50-42 USF lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• BG got several stops to begin the period, but could not take advantage at the offensive end, and finally, a Krimili three-point play put the Dons' lead into double digits once again.
• Parker answered with a long two-pointer after a nifty shot fake, but Williams responded with a bucket for a 55-44 USF lead.
• Hempfling split a pair of free throws, but a BG offensive rebound after the miss led to a Hill pull-up jumper. The teams traded hoops, with Thompson coming up with an offensive rebound and a banker in traffic, and the Falcons trailed by a 57-49 count.
• USF somehow missed a pair of easy layups, with Thompson rebounding the second miss, but a BG three-point try rattled out. Finally, Lucie Hoskova's driving layup gave the Dons an 11-point lead and prompted a BG timeout with 3:49 to go.
• Out of the timeout, Hempfling fed Hill for a three-pointer from the left wing, and the Falcons then forced a shot-clock violation by the Dons. When Hempfling powered inside for a layup, it was a six-point game with just over two minutes to go.
• Krimili faked a shot and, while in the air, fired the ball to Rathbun underneath the basket, but Rathbun could not find the handle, and the ball went out of bounds to BG with 1:39 to go.
• The Falcons missed a pair of shots, but came up with the rebound both times. Thompson was fouled on a layup try, hitting both free-throw attempts with 56.0 seconds to go. BG trailed by just four, at 60-56.
• But, the Dons used nearly all of the shot clock, and Williams hit a layup to put her team up by six with 28.3 seconds left.
• BG could not get a shot to drop on the next possession, and USF was able to seal the win with two more shots from the stripe in the final seconds.
FINAL STATISTICS
• San Francisco shot 38.1 percent from the floor on the day, but the Falcons shot 30.5% vs. the Dons, going 18-for-59.
• BGSU was 7-of-23 from long distance, with Madisen Parker hitting four triples, while USF was 5-for-13 from the arc.
• The Dons had a 44-38 rebounding advantage, and USF had a 36-14 lead in points in the paint.
• San Francisco had 17 offensive boards to BGSU's 14, but the Falcons had an 11-6 lead in second-chance points.
• Similarly, despite BG having more turnovers (14 to USF's 12), the Brown and Orange had a 19-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
UP NEXT
• BGSU will wrap up tourney action on Saturday (Nov. 30), taking on California Baptist. That contest will begin at 11:00 a.m. local time (2:00 p.m. ET) at CARSA Performance Gym.
• The Falcons are in the midst of a stretch of eight consecutive games away from home. BG's next home game is on Monday, Dec. 30, against Davis & Elkins.
