BGSU records 10th victory of season
Junior Achille Robin's goal in the 72nd minute lifted the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wright State University on Tuesday night (Nov. 5). The non-conference match was held at Alumni Field.
Freshman Nathan Masters drew the assist on Robin's goal, as the Falcons, now 10-6-1 on the year, captured the I-75 Cup. Senior Anthony Mwembia made two saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Brown and Orange.
BGSU outshot Wright State, 14-9, on the night. The Falcons had a 6-1 advantage in second-half shots, and did not allow a second-half shot until a WSU effort went wide with 1:30 to go.
THE I-75 CUP
• The Falcons, as mentioned, captured the I-75 Cup with Tuesday night's win. The cup, which goes to the winner of the BGSU-WSU game each year, was instituted by Falcon coach Eric Nichols and then-WSU coach Bryan Davis. BGSU is now 7-2-1 vs. the Raiders since the two coaches came up with the idea for the cup prior to the 2010 season.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT: ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR ANTO
• Senior Anthony Mwembia and the BGSU back line earned the shutout on Tuesday night. For Mwembia and the Falcons, it marked the ninth clean sheet of the season. That is the highest single-season total – both by an individual and by the team – since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow and the Falcons kept 10 clean sheets in 1998.
• Mwembia now has a career total of 28 shutouts, ranking second on the BGSU list. He trails only Vallow, who had 42 career clean sheets for the Orange and Brown. Vallow (1995-98) had 10 or more shutouts in all four of his seasons at BG.
ADDITIONAL BGSU NOTES
• The Falcons are now 10-6-1 on the season, with at least two matches remaining. BG won a total of six games last year.
• Junior Achille Robin's goal at WSU gives him four goals and 11 points this season to date. He is tied for second on the team in goals and ranks third in points.
• Robin, in his second season with the Falcons, now has five goals and 14 points in the Orange and Brown.
• Tuesday's goal was the first game-winning goal of Robin's BGSU career.
• Freshman Nathan Masters had the assist on Robin's goal. For Masters, it was his second assist of the season and his second in three games.
• For Masters, it was also the second game-winning assist of his career. He had an assist on fellow freshman Spencer Straka's winner vs. West Virginia at Cochrane Stadium on Oct. 26.
• Anthony Mwembia now has a career total of 230 saves, and ranks eighth on that BGSU list. His next target is Dan Traver (1992-94), who made 234 career stops.
• Sophomore Colin McCort made his first start of the season and the second of his BGSU career. McCort played all 90 minutes of Tuesday night's win.
FINAL STATISTICS
• The Falcons had a 14-9 advantage in shots, and a 4-2 lead in shots on goal. BGSU had six second-half shot attempts to just one for Wright State. The Raiders' only second-half attempt went wide with 90 seconds to go.
• Kale Nichols and Chris Sullivan were credited with three shots each, while Zach Buescher had two.
• BGSU had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
• Senior Anthony Mwembia made two saves, both in the first half, en route to his ninth shutout of the season.
• WSU's Joel Sundell played the first half of the match in goal, saving both shots on goal he faced. Alex Williams played the second half and made one save.
WHAT'S NEXT?
• The Falcons close the regular-season schedule on Saturday night (Nov. 9), hosting Northern Illinois at Cochrane Stadium. That Mid-American Conference contest is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start, and admission is free.
• The MAC Tournament will begin next Tuesday, Nov. 12, with first-round matches at campus sites. If BGSU defeats NIU on Saturday, the Falcons will host a first-round game on Tuesday. If the Falcons tie or lose to the Huskies, BGSU will go on the road for the league tourney opener.
