Thompson scores 20 for the second-straight game as BG grounds the Eagles
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team built a huge lead on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9), posting a 79-65 victory over Morehead State University at the Stroh Center.
Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson, who missed all of last season due to injury, scored 20 points for the second-straight game. In just her second collegiate contest, freshman Kaillie Hall had 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
As a team, the Falcons (2-0) went 10-for-21 from three-point land. BGSU built a 62-27 lead late in the third quarter before the Eagles (0-1) slowly chipped away at the enormous deficit.
Junior Madisen Parker and sophomore Morgan McMillen scored nine points apiece, while senior Jane Uecker added eight. Parker and McMillen each scored all of their points from beyond the arc, with McMillen coming off the bench to go a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance.
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling scored six points and led the Falcons with nine rebounds, while freshman Elissa Brett also had six points in the victory.
Thompson had a game-high four assists, and four of her teammates had two helpers apiece.
BGSU shot 45.3 percent from the field, and the Falcons were a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line in Saturday's victory.
The Falcon defense held the Eagles to just 36 points through three quarters, before the visitors went 11-for-18 from the floor in the fourth. But, the outcome had been decided long before the final 10 minutes.
FIRST QUARTER
• Caterrion Thompson set the tone early, knocking down a three-pointer with less than a minute gone. After the Eagles tied the contest with a triple, Jane Uecker scored inside after a nifty move, and Mari Hill stole the ball and wound up hitting a driving layup on the next possession, for a 7-3 lead.
• Another Thompson left-wing triple from a Kadie Hempfling feed gave the Brown and Orange a 10-5 advantage. That trey kick-started a 7-0 run, as Kaillie Hall and Angela Perry each were fouled and hit a pair of shots from the stripe.
• Perry came up with a steal and fired the ball ahead to Hall for a layup and a 16-7 lead, and Morgan McMillen then took a charge to give the ball back to BG.
• Elissa Brett's spinning, driving and-one layup and ensuing free throw gave the Brown and Orange a 19-7 lead in the final minute of the quarter, and the Falcons then got a stop to end the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• Hall opened the period with a driving layup, and the freshman then found McMillen for a corner three. When Uecker knocked down a layup, the Falcons had a 26-7 lead and the visitors took time with just 1:07 gone in the quarter.
• McMillen made a headlong dive toward the scorer's table to come up with a steal near the BG bench, and the sophomore got up, got the ball back and knocked down a triple for a 29-7 advantage.
• Hall found herself unguarded and knocked down a long two-pointer from the left side, and when Brett drilled a corner three, BG had a 34-11 lead.
• Thompson had a driving layup, then fed Madisen Parker for a left-side triple, and BG led by a 39-17 count. Parker hit another trey moments later for a 42-19 advantage.
• In the final seconds of the half, Hall converted a three-point play, and her free throw gave the Brown and Orange a 45-21 lead at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Hall was fouled on a drive just 10 seconds into the period and hit the ensuing charity tosses. Thompson put back a missed shot, then stole the ball and fed Uecker for a layup and a 51-23 lead.
• A steal by Hall led to a layup by Hall, and Thompson's steal resulted in an and-one layup and charity toss. Thompson and McMillen knocked down long-range shots just 17 seconds apart. McMillen's triple, with 4:14 left in the quarter, gave BGSU a 35-point lead, the largest of the game.
• After falling behind by that 62-27 score, the visitors looked to claw back. The Eagles scored seven-straight points, before Perry rebounded her own miss and laid the ball back up and in. Two MSU free throws cut the BG lead to 64-36 after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The visitors scored 29 fourth-quarter points to cut BG's lead to the teens by the end of the afternoon.
• Clare Glowniak hit a pair of free throws in the first minute of the period, and Uecker found McMillen for a three-ball. Hall beat the shot-clock buzzer for a driving layup and a 71-44 lead with 7:14 to go.
• Thompson drove and dished the ball to Hempfling, then hit a short jumper for a 75-49 lead. Brett spotted a wide-open Uecker for a layup at the 5:09 mark, giving the Brown and Orange a 77-53 advantage.
• Over the last five-plus minutes, MSU outscored the Falcons, 12-2. The visitors went 11-for-18 from the field in the fourth period after making a total of just 15 shots over the first three quarters.
