Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team received nine votes in the initial Women's College Gymnastics Association (WCGA) poll leading into the start of the 2020 season.
2020 BGSU Gymnastics Schedule
Defending national champion Oklahoma was picked first in the preseason poll and is followed by LSU, Florida, UCLA and Utah. BGSU was one of six Mid-American Conference programs to earn votes in the poll.
"Our team has spent much of this fall focused on developing strong bonds, goals and an overall team effort to work hard, but also to enjoy the journey," head coach Kerrie Turner, in her 13th season leading the Orange and Brown, said. "I have seen excellent development from several of our student-athletes in the all-around and our event specialists are working on consistency in areas where we will need additional depth."
Bowling Green is set to open the season at home Jan. 11 against an Eastern Michigan program that earned 17 votes in the poll. The Falcons will face one team ranked among the top 20 in the preseason poll this year, as BGSU will compete against No. 14 Minnesota in a four-team meet at Rutgers Jan. 18. The MAC Championship is set to take place March 21 at Western Michigan.
"Jovannah East will lead the way with exceptional difficulty on every event," Turner said. "I am excited that Elena Lawson has worked steadily to be prepared in the all-around, along with freshman Lily Harsch. We will also see some outstanding event specialists in Jasmine Jones, Sammy Marion and Taylor Jensen. Returning from injury, Alex Fochler is showing great potential, especially on uneven bars. Tess Muir is steadily returning and I expect her teammates in the sophomore class to make an impact on several events.
"It will be the overall team effort and energy that will determine our success this year. We will spend the next month focused on team building and routine consistency under pressure so that we are ready for the start of the season in January."
