Teepen Promoted to Associate Head Coach
December 13, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced the promotion of Sean Teepen to associate head coach. Teepen has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach on Nichols' staff.
"Sean has all of the requisite skills and is rising star in this profession," said Nichols. "More importantly, he truly embodies the essence of BGSU and our soccer program. Â We are lucky to have him and are looking forward to exciting times ahead with his expanded leadership."
Teepen, who joined the Falcon program in March of 2018, has helped the Falcons to an overall record of 19-14-5 in his first two seasons. His duties at BGSU include coaching the goalkeepers and serving as the program's recruiting coordinator.
Through the end of the 2019 campaign, BGSU has gone 18-9-3 over the last 30 matches.
The 2019 season saw the Falcons win 13 contests, the highest total in five years and only the second double-digit victory total since 1998. Teepen, who as mentioned works primarily with the goalkeepers at BGSU, helped senior Anthony Mwembia and the BGSU defensive corps keep 11 clean sheets – just one shy of the school record – in 2019. Mwembia ended his stellar Falcon career ranked second in program history in career shutouts.
"I'd like to thank Eric for putting so much trust in me in such a short amount of time," said Teepen. "BG is a special place that makes it easy to work so hard for, day in and day out. I am beyond excited for the future here, and I hope I can continue to make a positive impact for years to come."
In 2019, BG advanced to the MAC Tournament's championship match for the first time in five years. Along the way, the Falcons downed Northern Illinois at home in the quarterfinal round, then defeated Akron on the Zips' home field in the semifinals. The latter match marked BGSU's first victory over the Zips since 2002, and was the program's first road win since 1997.
The Falcons more than doubled the win total from the previous season, and BG won four total matches vs. MAC foes in a season for the first time since 2003.
BGSU landed a school-record six players on the All-MAC Team in 2019, including Mwembia, who earned first-team honors and went on to be  named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team as well.
BGSU closed the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-7-4, and the Falcons posted a 2-1-2 mark in MAC play. BG, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney.
BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the 2018 regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
"Sean has done a tremendous job in his role with the men's soccer program during the two seasons he has been at BGSU," said Harley King, BGSU Assistant A.D. for Compliance and the sport administrator for men's soccer. "His dedication and innovation have been momentous to the development of the student-athletes and advancement of the program."
Teepen, a native of Cincinnati, joined the Falcons after spending the 2017 season at Oregon State University. Under his guidance, three different 'keepers, including a pair of freshmen, had at least one shutout that fall. The Beavers posted four wins over ranked opponents in '17.
Teepen joined OSU after spending the 2016 campaign at Coastal Carolina University, where he helped the Chanticleers to Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament titles and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to joining the CCU staff, Teepen served as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at the University of Charleston (W.Va.), his alma mater, from 2013-15. While on the staff there, he helped the Golden Eagles men's soccer team win a combined five conference titles and earn the nation's No. 1 ranking by the NSCAA.
In 2015, Teepen helped Charleston to a 20-3 overall record and a Mountain East Conference tournament championship. The 2014 squad went 22-1-1, was an NCAA Division II national runner-up, earned that NSCAA No. 1 national ranking and won the MEC tournament. In 2013, Teepen's first year with the program, the Golden Eagles captured the MEC Tournament title.
Teepen entered the coaching ranks following an accomplished pro and college playing career. Between 2009 and 2012, he played at the University of Charleston, where he was a four-time NSCAA All-Regional and three-time WVIAC All-Conference selection.
Teepen earned his bachelor's degree in interior design from the University of Charleston in 2013 and his master's degree, also from Charleston, in strategic leadership in 2015.
