BGSU Battles Past Panthers for Third-Straight Win
December 14, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Hempfling has 18 as Falcons down MKE
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team went on the road and picked up a win for the third-straight Saturday, posting a 63-51 win over Milwaukee. BGSU is now 6-3 on the season.
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling paced the Falcons with a game-high 18 points vs. the Panthers. Hempfling went 8-for-13 from the field, and she scored five-straight points to extend BG's lead to 12 with under two minutes to go.
Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson had 16 points in the win, while junior Madisen Parker rounded out BG's trio of double-digit scorers with 11.
Junior Mari Hill had eight points and six rebounds. Hill, who played a game-high 37 minutes, led all players with four assists and two steals in the victory.
For the third-straight game, the Falcons never trailed. And, for the second consecutive contest, the game was close throughout, but BG had an answer for every opponent run.
Lizzie Odegard had a double-double for the hosts, with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Sydney Levy scored 11 points.
Freshman Elissa Brett led the Falcons with nine rebounds, while Hempfling and Parker joined Hill with six apiece.
BGSU shot 45.5 percent from the floor, but held the Panthers to just a 31.3% success rate. MKE made 20 total shots on the day.
The Panthers had a 40-38 rebounding advantage, but despite pulling down 14 offensive rebounds, had only six second-chance points.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson had 16 points on Saturday, her ninth double-figure scoring effort in as many games this season. It marks just the fifth time in the last 26 years that a BG player has hit double digits in at least nine-straight matches to begin the season.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"Any win's a great win, especially on the road. Today was an extremely physical game. Both teams battled, and I loved our fight. I thought we stuck with it, and we had some kids step up, make some critical plays and just be tough.
"It was a game where I felt like we knew coming in that we just needed to be tough. There are a million ways to win, and we'll take any of them. Today, I thought we did a good job of getting stops at the defensive end, and ultimately, we found a way."
FIRST QUARTER
• BGSU never trailed, and the Falcons scored the game's first five points, as junior Mari Hill found sophomore Kadie Hempfling for a three-pointer out top, then spotted Caterrion Thompson for a right-wing jumper. Thompson knocked down another jumper late in the shot clock for an early 7-2 lead.
• The hosts battled back to tie the contest on Sydney Levy's three-pointer, but BG came right back to take the lead on a long-range shot by junior Madisen Parker.
• Fellow junior Angela Perry was fouled heading into the first-quarter media timeout, and knocked down both free-throw tries after the break, for a 12-9 lead. The hosts answered with a bucket, but Thompson's jumper began a 6-0 BG run, with Hempfling hitting a hesitation jumper, then posting up and scoring inside for an 18-11 lead. A triple by Tadri Heard cut BG's advantage to four points after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• The teams combined for only one point in nearly three minutes to begin the period. But, Perry's nifty dish freed Hempfling for a baseline reverse layup, and Thompson's driving layup gave the Falcons a 22-15 advantage as MKE used a timeout.
• Sydney Staver scored after Levy's offensive rebound, but Hempfling pulled up for a banker and a 24-19 lead, and the sophomore powered her way inside for a layup several minutes later.
• Freshman Elissa Brett had drawn a charge on Bre Cera between the Hempfling buckets, and Cera was called for another foul, then whistled for a technical foul at the 2:25 mark. That gave her four fouls in the contest and sent her to the bench. Parker split a pair of free throws, and a Thompson charity toss just under a minute later gave BG a 28-21 lead. But, a late three-pointer by Levy cut the Falcons' lead to three points, 28-25, at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• Lizzie Odegard's three-pointer on the opening possession tied the contest at 28-28, but Parker's driving layup allowed BG to quickly regain the lead, and after a Hempfling offensive rebound, the sophomore found a wide-open Hill cutting to the hoop for an easy layup. Thompson's floater in the paint gave the Falcons a 34-28 lead as the Panthers used a timeout.
• Levy cut the lead in half with a corner three, and after Brett split a pair of free throws, the hosts' Jamie Reit scored four-straight points, tying the game once again. But, Parker fed Perry for a quick shot in the paint, and Parker then drilled a three-point try for a 40-35 BG lead.
• Perry scored again, and moments later, Thompson spotted a cutting Hill for a back-door layup and a 44-37 lead. Odegard's and-one layup trimmed that lead, but she missed the ensuing free throw, and sophomore Morgan McMillen found Thompson for a corner three and an eight-point lead, 47-39.
• The hosts answered with a layup and BG turned the ball back over, but a Hill deflection led to a Brett steal, and the freshman fired the ball ahead to Hill for a layup and a 49-41 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Thompson's jump-stop layup gave the Falcons a double-digit lead for the first time on the afternoon, and after Emma Wittmershaus answered with a bucket, Brett's three-point try rattled home for a 54-43 Falcon lead.
• The Panthers responded with a six-point run, as Odegard's third-chance layup made it a 54-49 game with 3:12 to go. But, Hill split a pair of players for a layup, and after the Falcons got a stop, Hempfling drove past her would-be defender for a layup and a nine-point lead.
• The Falcons got another defensive stop, and Hempfling banked home a straightaway three-pointer for a 61-49 BG lead with 1:43 remaining. The Panthers got a layup with 30 seconds to go, but could draw no closer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• The Falcons shot 45.5% from the field on the day, but held the Panthers to just a 31.3% success rate. BGSU took nine fewer shots, but made five more field goals, than MKE.
• Hempfling (18) and Thompson (16) combined for 34 of BGSU's 63 points, including 22 of the Falcons' 28 first-half points.
• BGSU went 6-for-16 from three-point land, with Hempfling a perfect 2-for-2 and Parker making two of her four long-range attempts. The Panthers were 5-of-20 from the arc, with Levy hitting three of her team's five triples.
• The Panthers had a narrow 40-38 lead on the boards. Both teams had 28 points in the paint, and BG had 12 points off turnovers to MKE's six.
