Falcons Fall Short vs. Undefeated Ramblers, 84-76
December 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Perry has 26 points, 12 boards in road setback
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team came up just short against an undefeated opponent on the road, falling to Loyola Chicago, 84-76, on Monday (Dec. 16). The non-conference game was held before a near-capacity crowd at Gentile Arena.
Junior Angela Perry had another impressive game for the Falcons (6-4), scoring a game-high 26 points to pace four double-digit scorers for the Orange and Brown. Perry posted a double-double, pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds.
Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson had 16 points, going 7-for-11 from the field. Thompson has scored in double figures in all 10 games this season to date.
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling and junior Madisen Parker had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hempfling had a game-high six assists vs. the Ramblers.
Allison Day had 20 points and Abby O'Connor 19 for the hosts (9-0).Â
On 'Field Trip Day' at Gentile Arena, the Falcons and Ramblers played before a crowd of over 3,700 fans.
BGSU shot over 50 percent for the third time in the last four games. The Falcons went 29-for-55 (52.7%) from the floor. BG was 6-for-7 from three-point range in the first half, but did not make a long-distance shot in the second half.
The Ramblers shot 49.2% from the field and hit nine triples in 24 tries (37.5%).
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"It was a tough one for us today. I thought we fought hard to get back into the game in the second half, with better effort. Then, we had some opportunities to tie the game, but we've got to do a better job at the free-throw line. We fought back, we got some second shots, we got to the free-throw line. Now, that next step for us is making that next play."
"It was a high-level game today, and I loved our fight. Now, we've got to get back to work and continue to get better."
FIRST QUARTER
• BGSU scored the first four points of the game, as junior Mari Hill lobbed the ball inside to classmate Angela Perry for a layup, then fired a pass to another junior, Madisen Parker, for a transition layup.
• The hosts battled back to within a point on a three-pointer by Ellie Rice, but sophomore Kadie Hempfling hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc for a 9-5 lead.
• LUC's Jala Johnson hit a long two-pointer, but Caterrion Thompson's Euro-step layup began a run for the Falcons. Hill stole the ball and found Parker for a right-wing three, and freshman Elissa Brett then fed Parker for another triple. When Perry scored inside, the Falcons had a 10-0 run and a 20-7 lead.
• But, the Ramblers answered BG's run with a run of their own. Tiara Wallace's three-pointer began an 8-0 surge for the visitors. Senior Jane Uecker powered her way inside for a layup to snap that run, and Hempfling scored late in the quarter before a Loyola free throw cut BG's lead to 24-18 after 10 minutes.
• BG went 10-for-12 from the floor in the opening quarter, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range.Â
SECOND QUARTER
• The hosts began the quarter on a 10-0 run, holding the Falcons scoreless for nearly four minutes. The run began on a Janae Gonzales corner three, and a layup by Allison Day, after several offensive rebounds, capped the run and prompted a BG timeout.
• Hempfling scored inside out of the break, and moments later, Brett hit a driving, spinning layup again bringing the Falcons within a single point. After a three-point play by Maya Dunson, Parker answered by taking a Hill pass and drilling a three-pointer. But, the hosts kept the Falcons at arm's length, scoring the next four point to go ahead by five.
• Hempfling drove and kicked the ball to Perry for a three-ball from straightaway center, but O'Connor answered with a long-distance shot of her own. Then, a steal led to a Day layup and a 41-34 Loyola lead with under a minute on the clock.
• Thompson hit a three out top, and after O'Connor knocked down a jumper, Hill hit a driving reverse layup in the waning seconds, cutting the Ramblers' lead to 43-39 at the half.
• The Falcons shot 64% (16-for-25) in the first 20 minutes, making six three-pointers in seven attempts (85.7%). But, the Ramblers had a 12-2 rebounding advantage in the second quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
• BG got a Thompson pull-up jumper and a pair of free throws from Perry, but the Ramblers were scoring at the other end. Rice's three-pointer gave the hosts a 50-43 lead.
• Hempfling scored inside, but Wallace drove and scored, and Gonzales made a step-back three. Brett got the ball inside to Perry for an and-one layup and a three-point play, but O'Connor connected from long range for a 58-49 Loyola lead.
• Thompson knocked down a contested jumper, but the Ramblers responded, and the hosts extended the lead to 11 points before Parker sank a pair of charity tosses. Perry scored twice at the stripe as well, and moments later, a driving layup by freshman Kaillie Hall cut the LUC lead to six.
• Day answered with a layup, but Hall hit a pull-up jumper, and the Falcons got a stop. Hempfling hit a long three-pointer in traffic to beat the buzzer, but it was ruled that the sophomore traveled before the shot, and the Ramblers led by six, 65-59, after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Neither team scored for nearly two minutes of the final quarter, before Hempfling pulled down an offensive rebound in traffic and flipped the ball to Thompson for a short jumper. Gonzales answered for the hosts, but Hempfling corralled another offensive board as she headed toward the corner, then fired a pass to a cutting Hall for a layup. Hempfling hit a layup of her own, and suddenly, the Falcons were within two, at 67-65.
• BG got a stop and drew a Loyola foul, but a pair of free-throw attempts were off the mark, and Day's three-point play gave the Ramblers a 70-65 advantage with 6:15 to go.
• The Falcons got within two points once again with just over two minutes to go. Perry hit a one-hander, then took a Hempfling pass and banked a shot off glass and in. A nifty turnaround J off of Parker's pass capped Perry's personal 6-0 run, and it was a 74-72 game.
• But, Sam Galanopoulos hit a floater, and after a BG miss, O'Connor's corner three made it a 79-72 Loyola lead with just over a minute to go.
• Thompson, however, hit a layup after a Perry offensive rebound, and Loyola threw the ball away with 48.0 seconds remaining. BG, however, turned the ball back over, and O'Connor's free throws gave the home team a seven-point lead.
• Perry was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and made both shots at the stripe, but the Falcons would draw no closer. BG fouled Loyola on the ensuing inbounds pass, and Rice split a pair of tosses, and after a Falcon three-point try was off the mark, O'Connor capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with just 12.9 seconds to go.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• The Falcons shot 52.7% from the field on the day, while Loyola had a 49.2% success rate. The hosts went 9-for-24 (37.5%) from three-point range, while BG hit six triples in 15 tries (40.0%).
• The Ramblers had a 34-28 rebounding advantage, grabbing 13 offensive boards to the Falcons' eight.
• Both teams had four double-digit scorers, and one player from each team reached the 20-point mark.
• Angela Perry had her first career double-double, leading all players in both points (26) and rebounds (12). Her rebounding total set a new career standard.
• Madisen Parker and Caterrion Thompson made two three-pointers apiece.
