BG held to three hits in Saturday setback vs. Boston U.
For the second-straight day, a sixth-inning uprising lifted Boston University to victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team. On Saturday (Feb. 16), the Terriers scored three times in the sixth en route to a 4-0 win over the Falcons.
The game was BG's third and final contest in the weather-shortened Upstate Classic, hosted by USC Upstate at Cyrill Stadium.
Ali DuBois threw a complete-game three-hit shutout for BGSU, striking out 13. BGSU senior Meredith Miller allowed two runs and five hits in five-plus innings, walking one batter and whiffing four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Arguably BGSU's best scoring chance of the day came in the first inning. After Miller responded to a two-out single with a strikeout in the top of the inning, the Falcons looked to mount a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame.
• After DuBois had retired the first two hitters, junior Madi McCoy singled, sophomore Sammy Dees walked and senior Kellie Natham banged a single through the left side to load the bases. But, DuBois, like Miller in the top of the frame, got a strikeout to retire the side.
• Miller allowed a leadoff single, but fanned the next hitter, and McCoy gloved a line drive at second and turned it into a double play.
• BG went down in order in the bottom of the inning, and Nicole Amodio homered to begin the third. The Terriers loaded the bases on an infield single, an error and a hit batter, but Miller got Alexa Ponce to hit a grounder to Dees at shortstop for out number three.
• Sophomore Nikki Sorgi singled with two down in the BG half of the third, but was stranded there.
• Each team put a pair of runners aboard in the fourth – BU on another HBP and a balk with one down, and BG on an Evelyn Loyola walk and a two-out error on a grounder by soph Sarah Gonzalez. But, the game remained 1-0 after four complete.
• The Terriers got a baserunner via error in the fifth, but Miller sandwiched a pair of fly balls around a fielder's-choice grounder.
• In the bottom of the fifth, BG made DuBois throw 25 pitches – including a 13-pitch at-bat for sophomore Payton Hamm which included seven foul balls – but after a Nikki Sorgi walk, a fielder's choice ended the frame.
• In the sixth, BU added to the lead with three runs. Analisa Ruff led off with a pinch-hit single, and senior Brooke Parker replaced Miller in the circle. A sac bunt, a hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases, and Aliyah Huerta-Liepner's double scored a pair of runs. The final run of the game came on Emily Morrow's grounder back to the circle.
• Parker retired the side in order, on just eight pitches, in the seventh. But, DuBois set down BG in order in both the sixth and seventh frames to close out the win.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
• Both McCoy and Nikki Sorgi went 1-for-1 in the game, and Sorgi drew a walk in her only other plate appearance.
• BG's other hit came from Natham, while Dees and Loyola each had a base on balls.
• Huerta-Leipner had two hits for the Terriers, while Amodio was 1-for-1 with a walk, two runs and one RBI.
• DuBois walked three and struck out 13 in her complete-game win. She threw 84 of her 122 pitches for strikes.
• Miller had 62 strikes among her 95 pitches.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons head south again next weekend, as BGSU will participate in the GWU Softball Tournament, hosted by Gardner-Webb, next Friday through Sunday (Feb. 22-24). The Falcons are scheduled to play two games against both GWU and Saint Francis (Pa.) along with one contest vs. East Tennessee State.
