Falcons Post Strong Opening Round At Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE Ariz. – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team opened the Rio Verde Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon with a team score of 302, which has the Falcons tied for fifth place in the 18-school event.
The tournament is being hosted by Western Michigan University, and is being held at the Rio Verde Country Club on the Quail Run course. The final 18 holes of play will be wrapped up tomorrow.
Bowling Green is just five shots off the lead. Arkansas State (297), Boise State (298) and Xavier (299) sit at the top of the leaderboard after the opening 18 holes. Bowling Green is sitting ahead of six of the other seven MAC schools in the tournament.
Individually, the Falcons were led by excellent performances from Jessica Madry and Erin Fahey. Madry carded a 72 and is just two shots off the lead, which is being held by Western Michigan's Claire Hernandez (70), who was the only player on the day to shoot below par. Madry is tied for fourth, while Fahey, who shot an opening-round 74, is tied for 11th.
Bowling Green's lineup was rounded out on the afternoon by Nichole Cox (77), Sammi Blackburn (79) and Julia Durkin (81). Cox led Bowling Green on the day with four birdies.
