BG Tennis Set To Start Conference Play This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team will kickoff the conference portion of their schedule this weekend with two MAC matches. After splitting the previous two matches in San Diego to begin the week, the Falcons will travel to Buffalo and Akron to start conference play. The first match will be on Friday, March 22 against Buffalo will a scheduled start of 1 p.m. followed by Akron on Sunday, March 24 with first serve also at 1 p.m. This year, the Falcons will enter conference play with a 7-6 standing.
Sweeps Week
Bowling Green's non-conference schedule concluded on Tuesday (March 19) in San Diego, Calif. On Monday (March 18), the Falcons captured a 7-0 sweep against Principia College, but fell to Clemson 7-0 the following day. On the season, BGSU has tallied four wins by way of a sweep, coming against Bellarmine University, Indiana Tech, Dayton and Principia. If the Orange and Brown can accomplish another sweep this season, they will tie the program record for sweeps in a season with five. Bowling Green has achieved the feat five times in program history with the most recent occasion being in the 2008-09 season.
Beginning With Buffalo
The Falcons conference schedule with begin in Buffalo on Friday against the Bulls. Buffalo will enter play with an 11-3 record on the season. Similarly, the match will serve as their first within the Mid-American Conference. Their three losses this season have come against Duquesne, West Virginia and Rutgers. Much like the Falcons, the Bulls have concluded four of their wins in the form of a sweep. Last season, Bowling Green faced Buffalo in regular season play with UB besting BGSU by a score of 7-0. The two met again in the MAC semifinals with the Bulls winning 4-1.
Awaiting Akron
BGSU's second conference game will come against the Zips of Akron. Prior to facing the Falcons, Akron will begin MAC play on Friday against Miami (OH). As of now, the Zips are 15-3 on the season, including a 5-0 record when playing at home. Their three losses have come against Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Ohio State, while three of their last four wins have been by sweep. Over the course of last season, the Falcons and Zips met just once with Bowling Green emerging victorious by a score of 6-1.

- In doubles play, Paula Comella is currently tied for No. 6 all-time with 74 doubles wins. A win would give her sole possession of No. 6 and put her five doubles wins behind No. 5.
- As for combined wins, Comella is currently tied at No. 10 all-time with 142 wins. With up to four opportunities to pick up wins this coming weekend, she could make a strong push up the list.
- Marharita-Sophia Tavpash is now tied for No. 25 all-time in doubles. With a win, she would take sole possession. No. 24 is currently held by Patty Bank (1993-96) with 58 doubles wins.
- For singles play, Polina Radeva is sitting at No. 24 with 58 wins. However, with two possible wins this weekend, she could jump as high as a tie for No. 22 all-time.
- In combined wins, Radeva is tied for No. 29 all-time with 103 wins. With a chance at four more wins this weekend, she could rise as high as No. 26 in the category.
