BGSU standout to play professionally in Sweden
Former Bowling Green State University women's soccer standout Jennifer Reyes will continue her career at the professional level. Reyes has signed a contract with Skövde KIK, a Division 1 team in Sweden's Norra Götaland League.
"I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to start off my professional soccer career," said Reyes, who wrapped up her collegiate career in the fall of 2018, as BGSU captured Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
Reyes, a native of Elkhart, Ind. (Concord HS), played in 20 matches, starting all 20, for the 2018 team. She had six points on a goal and four assists in her senior campaign. The goal proved to be a game winner, as she found the far corner of the net midway through the second half of BG's 1-0 win over Ohio in the MAC Tournament's semifinal round at Cochrane Stadium.
Reyes played in 74 career matches as a Falcon, making 57 starts. She had 13 points on three goals and seven assists in her BGSU career.
Reyes was named to the Academic All-MAC Team three times, and was a MAC All-Tournament Team selection in each of her last two seasons.
Over those final two years, the Falcons had an overall record of 27-12-4 under head coach Matt Fannon. BGSU went 16-5-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 20-6-2 in all games vs. conference foes during that time.
Reyes' signing is the latest chapter in an impressive success story. Not highly recruited before graduating from high school in 2013, she took the fall 2013 semester off, working in a factory to earn money for college.
After attending a community college in the spring of 2014, Reyes participated in an ID Camp at BGSU in July of 2014, one month before the start of fall semester. She was subsequently offered a walk-on position at BG, and played in 17 matches, starting four, in that 2014 season.
Then, Reyes tore her ACL during the summer of 2015, and was forced to sit out that fall as a redshirt.
She returned to the pitch in time for the 2016 campaign, playing in 16 matches and earning 12 starts, before making a total of 41 starts in the 2017 and '18 campaigns. The Falcons advanced to the championship match of the 2017 MAC Tournament before capturing regular-season and tourney crowns this past fall.
In the 2018 season, BGSU went 14-5-3 overall, tying the school record for wins and setting a new record for fewest losses in a season, and the Falcons were 10-1-0 in MAC regular-season play. BG won the league regular-season title for just the second time in program history, and the total of 10 conference wins set a new school record. The Brown and Orange captured the MAC Tournament title for the third time.
"We are incredibly proud of Jen," said Fannon. "She is a shining example of what happens when someone commits themselves to their goal. Her work rate, commitment and dedication to her team and her training show what can happen if you focus and are unwavering in the pursuit of your dreams.
"But, this is more than just about how well Jen has done recently. She has grown exponentially in the two years I have known her, as a person as much as a player. She is so mentally tough and so coachable that no matter what adversity came her way, we knew she was always going to find a way to make this happen."
Reyes will head to Göteburg in early April. She plans to play soccer "until I cannot play any more." Then, she plans to return to the United State to put her degree in Human Development and Family Studies degree to use.
"I am blessed to have had the success that I had in college," said Reyes. "I believe that has prepared me for the professional world."
