Late Rally Sends Miami Past BGSU In Series Opener
April 12, 2019 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team erased a four-run deficit, but eventually dropped its series opener to Miami University on Friday (April 12) afternoon at Steller Field. The RedHawks scored eight runs over the final three frames to earn the 12-4 victory in the Mid-American Conference ballgame.
Miami, one of the best mid-major teams in all of college baseball this season, moved to 27-6 on the season with the win. Miami sits in first place with an 8-2 league record. Bowling Green drops to 12-17 (5-5 MAC) following the late-innings loss.
After falling behind by a score of 4-0, Jake Wilson got the Falcons going with an RBI single in the fourth. In the sixth, BGSU's three-run rally was started by consecutive doubles from Neil Lambert and Riley Minorik, pulling the Falcons within two runs at 4-2. Bowling Green went on to tie the game following a sacrifice fly from Ryan Johnston, and a game-tying single from Dylan Dohanos.
Miami plated two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and five in the ninth to claim the win. The RedHawks registered 18 hits on the day, while the Falcons posted 11 hits. BGSU starter Andrew Abrahamowicz grinded through 6.0 innings, allowing four runs. Griffin Parrill tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Brad Croy, Lambert, Minorik and Wilson finished with two hits for the Falcons. BGSU's other hits were recorded by Jack Connelly, Tyler Haas and Dohanos.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"You have to give Miami a lot of credit – they are 27-6 for a reason. I like the way our guys dug themselves out of a four-run hole, and we were right there into the seventh inning. Unfortunately, they executed much better than us over the final three innings. I expect our guys to come out and play hard for 18 innings tomorrow."
SCHEDULE CHANGE
Due to inclement weather in the forecast on Sunday, the three-game series will now conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game of the day will start at 12:05 p.m., with the series finale beginning 30 minutes of the conclusion of the first game of the day.
