One Big Inning Makes the Difference in Each Game of Saturday Split
April 20, 2019 | Softball
Falcons' four-run sixth enough for victory in the opener, but Western bounces back in nightcap
One big inning was all it took to settle each game of Saturday's (April 20) softball doubleheader at Ebert Field. Bowling Green State University scored four times in the sixth inning en route to a 4-2 victory in the opening game of the twinbill.
But, in the nightcap, host Western Michigan University plated five second-inning runs and went on to defeat the Falcons by a 5-3 final.
Sophomore Sarah Gonzalez singled to drive home the game's first run in the opener, while classmate Payton Hamm came through with a three-run double later in that sixth inning.
Hamm had two hits in Saturday's opener, marking her second-straight multi-hit game, and her fourth in a five-game span.
Senior Brooke Parker got the win in Saturday's first game, while classmate Meredith Miller picked up the save.
Miller allowed only two earned runs in the nightcap, but a pair of BG errors led to three unearned Bronco runs in the second inning. The Falcons scored three times in the sixth, but could not get any closer. All seven of BGSU's runs in Saturday's twinbill came in inning number six.
Miller threw 69 of her 88 total pitches for strikes in Saturday's second game. Miller and Parker combined to hold WMU scoreless in 11 of 13 innings on Saturday.
BGSU-WMU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game was scoreless through five innings. Sophomore Payton Hamm, who had two hits for the Falcons in Friday's game, was the only baserunner for either team in the first frame, with a two-out single to center.
• BG mounted a threat against WMU starter Jordan Kurth in the second. With one out, junior Evelyn Loyola reached on an infield error, and sophomore Nikki Sorgi walked to send pinch-runner Logan Everett to second. Soph Sarah Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But, a strikeout was followed by a fielder's-choice grounder to enable Kurth to escape the jam.
• Senior Kellie Natham doubled in the top of the third, but was stranded there. In the bottom of the frame, senior Brooke Parker allowed a single to Skyler Sobeski after retiring the first seven hitters she had faced. A sac bunt and a Mackenzie Swinehart single put runners at second and third (Swinehart advanced on the throw, but Parker got Jenna Faultersack to hit an inning-ending fly ball to center on the very next pitch.
• BG threatened once again in the fourth against reliever Reily Galloway. Everett reached on an error, and one out later, Gonzalez singled. Senior Alex Sorgi singled to left with two outs, loading the bases, but a grounder to the left side produced the final out of the frame.
• The bottom of the inning saw Parker allow a pair of singles, but the senior got Logan Carter to pop up to Gonzalez at short to quell the uprising.
• Both teams were retired in order in the fifth, but the Falcons broke on top in the sixth. Everett led off with a double down the left-field line, and a Nikki Sorgi single to left put runners at the corners. Then, Gonzalez came through with a single to plate Everett with the game's first run.
• A grounder to the left side produced an out at third base, and Galloway got a strikeout for the inning's second out. But, senior Kali Holcomb drew a walk to load the bases, and Hamm's clutch three-run double gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead.
• Faultersack led off the bottom of the inning with a double, and an infield error put runners at the corners with no outs. But, Parker got a ground ball to freshman Madeline Dyer at third, who threw to first with the runners forced to hold. Then, Dyer threw out another runner, with Faultersack again forced to remain at third. The senior hurler then got Brooke Wyman to pop up to Gonzalez at short.
• BG went in order in the seventh, and the Broncos looked to mount a late-game rally. Sobeski walked with one down, and a two-out error put a pair of runners aboard. Faltersack reached on a fielder's choice that loaded the bases, before Sydney Stefanick singled to center, plating a pair of teammates. Suddenly, the Falcons' lead was just 4-2, and the potential winning run was coming to the plate.
• Senior Meredith Miller entered the game in the circle, however, to face cleanup hitter Kaylen Glenfield. On the eighth pitch of an at-bat that featured five foul balls, Miller got Glenfield to swing and miss for strike three, and the Falcons had the victory.

But, Sophia Ehlers doubled down the leftfield line to plate Faultersack and give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. Sobeski followed with a double of her own, making it a two-run game.

• The Falcons got on the board in the sixth, as the first three hitters reached base. Alex Sorgi singled, and Holcomb drew a walk in a pinch-hitting appearance. Then, Hamm singled to center to plate Sorgi.
• Stefanick got the first out of the inning, as a grounder back to the circle resulted in a force at third. But, McCoy singled on the very next pitch to load the bases.
• Then, Loyola won an epic battle with Stefanick, fouling off five-straight pitches before clubbing a two-run double to left-center. Hamm and Natham scored to cut the WMU lead to 5-3. Stefanick was able to escape further damage in the inning.
• Miller worked around a pair of two-out WMU baserunners in the home half of the sixth, striking out Emma Nuyen to send the game to the seventh.
• Dyer began that seventh frame by reaching on an infield error. Then, Alex Sorgi reached on a base hit up the middle, as the WMU second baseman made a diving stop behind the bag but had no play at any base, and the Falcons had two runners on base with no outs.
