Sunny Marchand Returns To BGSU As Assistant Gymnastics Coach
July 29, 2019 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University gymnastics coach Kerrie Turner has announced that 2013 BGSU graduate Sunny Marchand has been named an assistant coach for the program.
"I am so pleased to welcome Sunny home to BGSU," Bowling Green State University gymnastics coach Kerrie Turner said. "She brings many skills and perspectives to the role of assistant coach and I am excited that she will be ready to jump right in and help our program succeed. Her passion for BGSU Gymnastics really shone throughout the interview process and it is clear she brings great energy to all aspects of her role within the program."
As part of the staff named as the 2019 NCAA Northeast Regional Assistant Coaches of the Year, Marchand has spent the past two seasons at New Hampshire. The Wildcats earned their third EAGL Championship in program history, finishing a perfect 14-0 at home and 23-4 overall, reaching the NCAA Regionals. Two members of the team competed in the second round of regionals as individuals.
In her role, Marchand assisted with program operations, recruiting and overseeing the community gymnastics class program. She organized team meals, was involved in meet setup, and performed technical functions during meets.
Marchand competed for Turner from 2009-13 and then spent two years as an assistant coach in the program, primarily focusing on vault and floor, while overseeing the team's academics and community service. In 2014, she helped the Falcons to their best conference finish in 22 seasons, guiding Jamilah Ali and Amanda Lievendag to back-to-back MAC Championships in the vault in 2014 and 2015.
From there, she moved on to Ball State as a graduate assistant in the Student-Athlete Academic Support office, as well as with strength and conditioning. Her responsibilities included designing and implementing strength programs for women's cross country and men's swimming, while assisting with the gymnastics and women's volleyball teams.
A 2013 BGSU graduate, Marchand was co-captain in 2013 and an NACGC/W Academic All-American. She earned her master's degree in sport performance from Ball State. Marchand qualified for the 2006 and 2009 Junior Olympic National Championships and as an elite, she qualified for the 2006 U.S. Classic meet.
