SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team continues a three-match homestand on Tuesday evening (Sept. 17), taking on Cleveland State University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free. The Falcons are 3-1-1 on the young season, and BGSU has outscored the opponents, 8-3.
FIVE THINGS ABOUT BGSU-CLEVELAND STATE
• Senior Chris Brennan scored off of a feed by sophomore Kale Nichols just 2:06 into Friday night's match vs. Ohio State at Cochrane. For the Falcons, it was the earliest goal in a match in nearly 12 years, since Thomas McLean found the back of the net in a 3-1 win over Northern Illinois in November of 2007. Brennan is tied with junior Chris Sullivan for the team lead in goals (two), assists (two) and points (six).
• The Falcons have scored first in all five matches this season, scoring within the game's first seven minutes on three occasions. And, BGSU has scored the first goal in each of the last 10 regular-season matches, dating to last season. The last time the opponent scored first in a regular-season matchup was on Oct. 9, 2018, when IUPUI got on the board first in Indianapolis. BGSU rallied for an overtime win on that night.
• BGSU, as mentioned, is 3-1-1 on the young season. The Falcons started last season with a record of 1-5-2, but since that time, BG has gone 8-2-3 in regular-season contests and 8-3-3 overall.
• Cleveland State is 1-1-1 on the young season, with a 2-2 draw at No. No. 14 Louisville, a 4-0 win over Robert Morris and a 1-0 loss at Oakland on Saturday (Sept. 14). Gabe Pewu and Jannis Schmidt each have four points on the season, with Pewu scoring a goal in each of CSU's first two matches and Schmidt leading the team with two assists. Omeed Naeemy has played all three matches in goal and has eight saves and a GAA of just 0.93.
• The Falcons lead Cleveland State, 17-16-1, in the all-time series, but the host Vikings picked up a 2-0 win last season to snap a four-match BGSU series win streak. The Falcons are 10-7-0 at home and 7-9-1 on the road vs. the Vikes over the years. The teams have played every year since 2011.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following Tuesday's match, BG will wrap up a three-game homestand by taking on Cincinnati on Saturday (Sept. 21). The UC match, part of the program's annual Alumni Weekend, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane.
• Then, the Falcons hit the road to face Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Wildcats went 19-2-1 last year and earned a trip to the Elite Eight, and UK was ranked No. 17 in last week's United Soccer Coaches poll (note: BGSU was ranked No. 25 in last week's USC poll, and the next poll will be released on Tuesday).
