Washington's Winner Lifts Falcons in Double-OT Thriller
September 05, 2019 | Women's Soccer
BG senior scores with six seconds on the clock to down Dayton
Senior Chelsee Washington scored with just six seconds remaining in the second overtime, lifting the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the University of Dayton Thursday night (Sept. 5). The non-conference thriller was held at Cochrane Stadium.
Freshman Kennedy White scored for the third consecutive match for the Falcons (2-1-1), tying the score in the 62nd minute after UD had gotten on the board early.
The Flyers (1-3-1) got a goal from Landy Mertz just over five minutes into the contest to take an early lead, and the visitors controlled much of the first half of play. But, the momentum slowly shifted to the Falcons as the second half wore on, and BG controlled play for much of the two OT periods.
Washington's goal was the program's first 'Golden Goal' in just under three years, and it extended the Falcons' school-record home unbeaten streak to 13 matches.
Washington had a three-point night, with an assist on White's goal, while redshirt junior Nikki Cox had the primary assist on both BG goals Thursday night.
Freshman Becky Moss earned the win in goal in her collegiate debut. Moss made four saves in just under 108 minutes of action between the posts.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Thursday night's win was the Falcons' first overtime victory in nearly three years, and only the Falcons' fourth in the last decade. BG's last 'Golden Goal' was scored by Erica Hubert at Navy on Sept. 11, 2016.
• Washington's goal, at the 109:54 mark, was the latest goal in school history, breaking the record set by Hubert in that Navy match. Hubert scored at 109:39 in that contest, also a 2-1 BG win.
Â
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons extended the current home unbeaten streak to a school-record 13 matches. BG is now 11-0-2 in the last 13 contests at Cochrane, and the Falcons are now 19-3-2 at home since Matt Fannon assumed the head-coaching helm prior to the 2017 season.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 6' | GOAL | The Flyers got on the board early, as Landy Mertz took a pass from Laney Hubert and scored from approximately 17 yards out.
• 11' | The Falcons had a chance when freshman Katie Cox played a right-side cross into the box. Fellow Falcon freshman Kennedy White laid the ball off to redshirt junior Nikki Cox, who hit a shot from the top of the box on the right side. But, UD 'keeper Carly Becker was able to make the stop. That shot would prove to be BG's only shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
• 16' | Sophomore Alexis Miller played a long ball ahead to White on the left side of the field. White, working against a pair of defenders, cut the ball back toward the center of the box and got a shot off from about 15 yards out, but that hard shot went just over the bar.
• 30' | Freshman Makenzie Ortman entered the match in the 29th minute and provided instant offense for the Falcons. Not long after she checked in, Ortman took a nifty diagonal ball from Miller Cox on the left side of the box and hit a shot that went just wide of the near post. Then, several minutes later, Ortman took a pass on the left side, cut the ball back to leave a Dayton defender in her dust, and put a shot just wide of the far post.
Â
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 47' | White took a Washington pass and sent Katie Cox down the left side. Cox headed into the penalty area and knocked a low crossing ball toward the six-yard box. A UD defender deflected the pass toward goal, but Becker was able to smother the ball.
• 49' | A free kick by senior Maureen Kennedy sailed into the box, and was deflected to Miller just outside the area. But, the sophomore's shot from about 20 yards out sailed just high.
• 53' | After a turnover by one of her BG teammates in the Falcons' own end of the field, Kennedy hustled back to dispossess a Dayton striker at the top of the box.
• 56' | White's pass found Nikki Cox at the top of the box, but her turnaround shot was tipped wide of the left post by a diving Becker.
• 60' | Freshman Audrey Shea played a ball from just over midfield into the box, and White ran onto it and hit a nifty one-time volley out of the air. But, the shot was just off target.
• 62' | GOAL | Washington brought the ball down the left side of the pitch, in front of the bleachers. The senior cut back toward the center of the field and played a pass to Nikki Cox. Cox put a pass through several defenders and into the box, and White's one-time finish tied the score.
• 87' | Following White's goal, the teams combined for only one more shot on goal in the remaining 28-plus minutes of regulation. After afoul on the Falcons, Alexis Goins hit a hard free kick on frame from just over 18 yards out, in the center of the pitch. Falcon freshman Becky Moss made an acrobatic save, parrying the ball into the air, and a follow-up try by the Flyers went wide.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 95' | The Falcons had the only three shot attempts of the first overtime, including an effort by sophomore Sarah Allen almost exactly halfway through the period. Allen made a long run downfield, leaving several UD players in her wake, and hitting a hard shot that was deflected out for a corner kick. Off of that corner, an effort by Katie Cox was wide right.
• 106' | Allen won the ball on the right side of the field. The soph took it toward the end line and crossed it to Nikki Cox, but her one-timer sailed high.
• 108' | Junior Sophia Barnes made a nifty move to elude a would-be defender near midfield, and Barnes played a long ball ahead to the onrushing Allen. But, she couldn't quite control the pass, and it went wide of the right post.
• 110' | GOAL | With under 25 seconds left, the Falcons won a throw-in in front of the BG bench. Kennedy received the ball in the center circle and played it forward.. Nikki Cox settled it as she and Washington reached the 18-yard line, and Washington blocked a desperate clearing attempt by a UD player. Cox tapped the ball to her left, and Washington quickly settled it with her left foot and fired a shot with her right. The ball found the upper-left corner of the net, sparking a wild celebration.
