KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team earned an 85-82 road victory on Tuesday (Jan. 14) evening at Western Michigan University. The Mid-American Conference contest was played inside WMU's University Arena. The Falcons have now won three-straight games.
The Falcons have bounced back strong from a MAC-opening loss to Kent State. With tonight's win, BGSU is now 12-5 (3-1 MAC) on the campaign. With the loss, Western Michigan drops to 8-9 (1-3 MAC).
With WMU up by one point with under 6:30 left in regulation, Bowling Green's starting backcourt of Dylan Frye and Justin Turner took over the game. Frye gave the Falcons a 74-72 lead at the 6:15 mark with a step-back triple. Turner then scored BGSU's next eight points.
Turner followed with a triple of his own with 5:23 to go to push the lead to 77-72. The Broncos then split a pair at the line, prior to a Turner fast-break layup. With 2:51 remaining, Turner nailed a deep three-pointer. WMU burned a timeout, as the Falcons took an 82-73 lead.
After a quick 7-0 run from Western Michigan cut the BGSU lead down to two points, senior forward Marlon Sierra converted an and-one layup with 40 seconds to go. The three-point play gave the Falcons an 85-80 lead.
Western Michigan countered with a two-point bucket. The Falcons then missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the BGSU defense locked down, defending two potential game-tying treys. On the final play of the game, a WMU three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.
Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden led the Falcons with 19 points. Frye (16 points), Turner (12 points) and Sierra (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Orange and Brown.
