Trice triple begins game-ending run
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a game-ending 17-3 run to down Western Michigan University, 72-63, Wednesday evening (Jan. 22). The Mid-American Conference contest was held at the Stroh Center.
Juniors Angela Perry and Mari Hill combined for 36 points, but the victory was a total team effort for the Falcons (8-10, 1-5 MAC).
BGSU led for much of the night, but the Broncos (10-7, 3-3 MAC) took a five-point lead – WMU's largest of the game – on a corner three by Jordan Walker with 5:41 to go. But, freshman Olivia Trice answered with a three-pointer of her own on the next possession, beginning that game-ending run.
Hill hit a pair of free throws on BG's next trip down the floor to tie the game, and after Leighah-Amori Wool answered with a bucket to give Western the lead with 4:24 remaining, Hill's quick layup tied the score once again and began a 9-0 run for the Falcons.
With 2:47 to go, junior Madisen Parker – the nation's leader in three-point field-goal percentage – knocked down a triple to give the Orange and Brown the lead for good. Parker scored eight points and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the arc in the win.
Perry scored a game-high 20 points, while Hill had 16, just one off of her season high.
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling flirted with a triple-double, with eight points and game-high totals of 12 rebounds and nine assists.
For the Broncos, Breanna Mobley had 17 points to pace four double-figure scorers.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Falcons, who had led in the final few minutes of each of the final four games in that stretch.
THE GAME-WINNING RUN
• As mentioned, the Falcons ended the game on a 17-3 run. During that time, BGSU went 4-for-6 from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range, and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. By contrast, the Broncos were 1-of-12 from the floor (including 0-of-5 from the arc) and 1-of-2 from the stripe.
• In that time, the Falcons held an 8-4 rebounding advantage.
• Five different Falcons scored points in that stretch. Junior Madisen Parker had five points and three rebounds during the run, while classmate Mari Hill and freshman Olivia Trice scored three points apiece.
• Junior Angela Perry had two points in that time, while sophomore Kadie Hempfling had two points, four rebounds in two assists in the final five-plus minutes.
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons scored the game's first seven points, scoring on each of the first four possessions of the night. Hempfling muscled her way inside for a layup, and Parker found Perry for a turnaround shoot. Senior Caterrion Thompson got to the line and split a pair of free throws, and after a Western miss, Hempfling corralled a rebound and fired a pinpoint pass from midcourt, finding Hill underneath the hoop for a reverse layup and a 7-0 lead.
• The Broncos scored four-straight points before senior Clare Glowniak hit a banker after a nifty pass from Hill. But, back-to-back three-pointers by Kamrin Reed and Reilly Jacobson gave the Broncos a 10-9 lead.
• Moments later, Trice's driving layup tied the score at 12-all and began another 7-0 run for the Falcons. Hempfling's pass resulted in a Perry bucket, and Hill hit from the top of the arc for a 17-12 lead.
• Mobley's layup stopped that BG run, but Hill came right back with a driving, up-and-under layup to give the hosts a 19-14 advantage after 10 minutes.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Freshman Kaillie Hall was fouled just five seconds into the quarter, splitting a pair of free throws, and Hempfling's sweet pass resulted in a layup by freshman Elissa Brett, giving BG a 22-14 lead.
• Walker's driving shot rolled in, but Hill countered with a driving layup of her own. Moments later, Thompson's bucket gave the Falcons a 27-20 lead, and the advantage was again seven points after Glowniak found Hill for a reverse layup.
• Maddie Watters answered with a three-pointer, and a Mobley hoop cut the Falcons' lead to just two points, but Hempfling got a contested layup to drop, and after a pair of Walker charity tosses, Hempfling's steal led to a Thompson transition layup. Perry's foul-line jumper in the final seconds of the half gave BG a 35-29 lead at the break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Hempfling's handoff resulted in a Thompson layup and an eight-point lead on the opening possession of the quarter, but the Broncos scored the next five points. Perry hit a foul-line jumper, and Hempfling found Parker for a right-wing triple, but Chelayne Bailey answered with a trey of her own.
• That Bailey trey began a 9-0 run for the hosts, as Wool hit two free throws, then a layup, and Mobley's short jumper bounced around and in. The Falcons, trailing by a 45-42 score, used a timeout at the 4:31 mark.
• BG battled back, as Hempfling hit two free throws, and Perry ended the quarter with her own personal scoring run. The junior, after a brief rest, checked into the game with 2:57 on the clock, and proceeded to score the Falcons' final nine points of the period.
• Perry took a pass from Hempfling and scored inside, and the junior then was fouled and knocked down a pair of shots at the line. Bailey answered with a trey, but Thompson found Perry for a turnaround shot and a 50-49 lead.
• Wool backed down her defender for a layup, but the Broncos' lead was short-lived as Perry was fouled again and hit a free throw with 50.3 seconds to go. She missed her second shot from the stripe, but as a WMU player went to corral the rebound, she stepped on the end line, giving the ball back to BG. With 41.0 seconds on the clock, Perry was fouled again, this time hitting both attempts for a 53-51 lead.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Brett's driving layup opened the fourth-period scoring, but the Falcons then went scoreless for nearly four minutes. Mobley's putback began a 9-0 run for the visitors, and Bailey corralled a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast to tie the score.
• The game remained tied for over two minutes before Jacobson hit a pair of free throws at the 6:18 mark. A BG three-pointer was well off the mark, and Walker's three-ball at the other end found nothing but net, giving Western a 60-55 lead with 5:41 remaining.
• But, Hill kicked the ball out top to Trice, who knocked down a triple try on the next possession. BG got a stop, and Hill was fouled and converted two free throws to tie the game with 4:44 to go. Wool hit a layup, but Hill came right back with a layup of her own.
• Then, roughly 90 seconds later, Hempfling drove the baseline and whipped a pass to Parker on the left wing. The junior's catch-and-shoot three gave the Falcons the lead for good with 2:47 left.
• Western got several offensive boards on the next possession, but ultimately came away empty, and Perry took a Hempfling pass and wheeled around her defender for a layup and a five-point lead with just under two minutes on the clock.
• BG forced a miss, and at the other end of the court, Hempfling rebounded her own miss, was fouled and hit both shots for a 69-62 lead with 1:05 to go. Bailey split two tosses with 39.2 seconds left, but Western would not score again. Two Parker free throws gave BG an eight-point lead, and after another WMU miss, Hill's charity toss closed the scoring with 19.9 seconds on the clock.
