SETTING THE SCENE...
• The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team concludes the January portion of the 2019-20 schedule this weekend. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons head to Athens for a Saturday (Jan. 25) matchup with Ohio University, with tipoff set for 1:00 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
THE STARTING FIVE (FIVE SOMEWHAT FASCINATING FALCON FACTS)
• BGSU snapped a five-game losing streak with a 72-63 win over Western Michigan on Wednesday night (Jan. 22) at the Stroh Center. As was the case with the previous four games, the WMU matchup came right down to the wire.
• In each of the previous four games, BGSU had led with under four minutes to go. In three of those contests, the Falcons held a slim lead with under 1:30 left in regulation. And, in two of them – vs. Akron (Jan. 11) as well as at Toledo (Jan. 18) – BG was ahead with under 30 seconds remaining.
• And, on Wednesday, the contest was tied with four minutes to go. But, junior Madisen Parker's three-pointer with 2:47 remaining broke that tie and gave BG the lead for good. Parker's triple was part of a 9-0 run for the hosts.
• That nine-point run was part of a larger 17-3 game-ending run for the Falcons. BG trailed for only five-plus minutes on Wednesday night, but the Broncos took a five-point lead – Western's largest of the game – with 5:41 left. But, freshman Olivia Trice hit a three-pointer on the next possession, and junior Mari Hill scored four-straight BG points before Parker's go-ahead trey.
• Hill and fellow junior Angela Perry combined for 36 points in the win over Western. Perry had a game-high 20 points, while Hill scored 16, just one shy of her season high. Sophomore Kadie Hempfling flirted with a triple-double, with eight points and game-high totals of 12 rebounds and nine assists.
PARK FROM THE ARC! (FOUR LONG-DISTANCE FACTS ABOUT NUMBER FOUR)
• Junior Madisen Parker currently leads the entire nation in three-point field-goal percentage, with a 50.0 percent success rate (a school-record pace) this season. Parker has made a team-leading 63 three-pointers this year to date, and – with at least 13 games remaining in BGSU's season – has moved into 14th place on the BGSU single-season list.
• Parker is 29 successful triples shy of tying the BG single-season record, held by the legen ... wait for it ... dary Lauren Prochaska, who hit 92 long-range shots 10 years ago (2009-10).
• The Fort Wayne, Ind., native has made at least one triple in each of this season's 18 games, and has hit three or more long-distance shots 11 times in 2019-20. She made 'only' two triples on Wednesday vs. WMU, but was a perfect 2-for-2 from the arc, including a three-ball with 2:47 to go that gave BGSU the lead for good.
• Parker now has 108 career treys, and has moved into 18th place on the BGSU career list. Not surprisingly, Prochaska holds the BG career record, with 310 successful three-pointers in her Falcon tenure (2007-11).
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BOBCATS
• Ohio is 11-6 overall, and the Bobcats are 4-2 in MAC play. The 'Cats have won the last two games, over Ball State at home and Northern Illinois on the road, and the team's two league losses have been by a combined three points.
• Ohio is 6-1 at home, 4-4 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites.
• Cece Hooks leads the team with 16.6 ppg, followed closely by Erica Johnson at 16.5 ppg. Johnson has 7.9 rpg as well, while Hooks leads the MAC in steals, with 3.6 spg.
• Head coach Bob Boldon returned eight letterwinners, including four starters, from a 2018-19 Bobcat squad that finished with records of 30-6 overall and 14-4 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Ohio, 55-31, in the all-time series, but the Bobcats have won each of the last 10 meetings after BG had taken the previous four games. Last year's two meetings were narrow Ohio victories. The first saw the Falcons trail by as many as 21 points before rallying to get within one point. But, Ohio escaped the Stroh Center with an 82-79 win (Jan. 26, 2019). Then, the 'Cats used a fourth-quarter surge to post a 76-68 victory in Athens on the final day of the regular season (March 9, 2019). BGSU's last win in the series was a 63-39 victory on March 2, 2014. BG is 31-10 in home games, 21-19 in road contests and 3-2 in neutral-site games vs. Ohio over the years. Much more info on the BGSU-Ohio series can be found on page 13 of the PDF version of these never-tedious notes.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Ohio tilt, the Falcons will have a midweek bye before hosting Miami on Saturday, Feb. 1, in a 2:00 p.m. tipoff at the Stroh.
